What To Expect
1
Kenai Fjords National Park
In Kenai Fjords National Park, over half of the landmass is covered by the enormous Harding Icefield, a thousand-foot block of ice that dates back to the last Ice Age. The Harding spills out in all directions in the form of glaciers. Some stretch northwest into rugged hills of the Kenai Peninsula. Others—five of them, to be exact—reach as far as the sea along the craggy coast of the Gulf of Alaska.
2
Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge
Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge is comprised of 2,400 islands, headlands, rocks, islets, spires and reefs and is known for its abundance of seabirds.

We really enjoyed our trip and I think we were lucky to have smooth seas and a sunny day. We saw fabulous scenery, whales, sea lions, bald eagles and other birds, puffins and even got close ups of a black bear (only the second time they saw one this season) and also the glaciers. We had a good lunch and an informative talk. We were even given hot cookies at the end. Even though it is a bit expensive I would recommend it.

We booked the 6 hour day cruise to the Kenai National Park. A small bus picked us up from the train station at 11am & transferred us to the dock where The Aialik Voyager was waiting to take us on the tour. I was a little apprehensive of the 6 hours on the boat knowing it would be cold & very windy but this turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip to Alaska. It was a bright beautiful sunny day, turquoise waters, cold & windy but we had such a great time.....spent a lot of time on the deck, saw lots of orca whales, few humpbacks, sea lions basking in the sun posing for us amidst some incredible scenery, millions of puffins, bald headed eagles. The glacier calving was fantastic....one of the staff fished out a huge chunk on board & we took turns trying to lift it. The colour of the sea changed from a deep turquoise to a lighter greenish blue with all the ice floating in it....just amazing to see. They served us a boxed lunch which was adequate, also hot/cold drinks & some snacks are available on board. The boat was clean & comfortable. When the wind got too much we would go inside for a little bit to get warm & then step out again to take more pictures. The warm choclate chip cookies at the end of the trip was a nice touch. Lots of beautiful pictures & wonderful memories of the many things we did in Alaska, this tour was most certainly one of our favourites.

We saw the glaciers calving, which was really amazing to see. Also saw some whales right up by the boat. Because we were late in the season, there wasn't very much other wildlife. There was a lengthy patch, about 45 minutes, where the ride was really rough with giant waves, and oddly they gave us our box lunch right before rough patch. Overall really enjoyable though. The views were absolutely breathtaking.
