What To Expect

Kentucky Derby Museum

Located in Louisville, the Kentucky Derby is one of America’s most exciting horse racing events in the world and takes place at Churchill Downs Racetrack. It is the first leg of the American Triple Crown and is known as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports" because of the actual duration of the race. Some like to call the race "The Run for the Roses" for the blanket of roses draped over the Derby winner. When you visit, you will enjoy a self-guided tour of the Kentucky Derby Museum, which includes two levels of family-friendly interactive permanent & temporary exhibits. Ten minutes past each hour, you will have the opportunity to see "The Greatest Race," an 18-minute movie about the Kentucky Derby and its history, a story that puts you right in the heart of the first Saturday of May. Immediately following "The Greatest Race" and at 30-minutes past every hour, you will experience an exhilarating 30-minute guided walking tour of historic Churchill Downs Racetrack and witness where some of the most famous teams of jockeys and Thoroughbreds competed such as Secretariat, Barbaro, Big Brown, California Chrome and the most recent Triple Crown winner in 2015- American Pharoah.

Loved getting a guided tour included with our admission to the museum. Barry was a wonderful guide. Informative and funny! His appreciation of the track and the legacy of the derby made for an extra special tour. The movie was amazing! Would have only been improved by the addition of using all the text screens instead of just a few at a time. Our guests from out of the country could have understood more of the speaking in the film then. Overall, a wonderful experience!

Huge, free parking lot in front of the venue. There were workers on golf carts that rode around to pick you up from your car to bring you over to the ticket window or museum. General admission tickets were $15, but for an additional fee, they also offered a "behind the scenes" tour. The museum itself had an area where you could view of video, tons of memorabilia and trophies, and a few interactive areas (like a place where you could "race a horse". Lots of great history to read about and see. They also had a gift shop that had everything derby themed you could imagine (including $150 derby hats). If you go on a day with races, you can check out Churchill Downs right next door to enjoy the experience.

So much history, so many stories. Awesome displays and a number of interactive exhibits for visitors of all ages.The walking tour, which is included in the admission is very interesting. One could spend hours here. A must see during a Louisville visit. We also did the Barn and Backside Tour which is worth every extra penny.
