What To Expect

Kentucky Derby Museum
Located in Louisville, the Kentucky Derby is one of America’s most exciting horse racing events in the world and takes place at Churchill Downs Racetrack. It is the first leg of the American Triple Crown and is known as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports" because of the actual duration of the race.  Some like to call the race "The Run for the Roses" for the blanket of roses draped over the Derby winner. When you visit, you will enjoy a self-guided tour of the Kentucky Derby Museum, which includes two levels of family-friendly interactive permanent & temporary exhibits.  Ten minutes past each hour, you will have the opportunity to see "The Greatest Race," an 18-minute movie about the Kentucky Derby and its history, a story that puts you right in the heart of the first Saturday of May.  Immediately following "The Greatest Race" and at 30-minutes past every hour, you will experience an exhilarating 30-minute guided walking tour of historic Churchill Downs Racetrack and witness where some of the most famous teams of jockeys and Thoroughbreds competed such as Secretariat, Barbaro, Big Brown, California Chrome and the most recent Triple Crown winner in 2015- American Pharoah.
Cancellation Policy

For someone that knows little to nothing about horse racing, my husband and I really enjoyed our time here. The parking was free and it was easy to find the place. We bought admission online so getting in was quick and easy. I loved that you get a free walking tour with admission even if the tour is a bit short. I had wanted to book one of the behind the scenes tours but because it was still racing season, the one I wanted wasn’t available. I was really bummed about that because the walking tour got me interested in seeing more of Churchill Downs. The museum is very cool, with everything from interactive exhibits ( that I was sad I was not able to enjoy because the kids in the summer groups were hoggin’ everything), to trophies, and a section on the fashion! I also wasn’t planning on seeing the free movie because I wasn’t interested but you HAVE to see it. It is really good at getting you excited about what you are about to see and gives you somewhat of an education. The staff were really nice as well. The only other thing I was disappointed in was the Cafe. I had hoped to try some derby pie at the place that holds the derby or a mint julep! However it was a ghost town in there and I didn’t see any pies out. We went back to our hotel to have both instead.

I wanted to see the movie on 2 occassions because it was highly recommended but the 1st time it was shown, I was having a mint julep at the DErby Cafe and the 2nd time it was offered, I had to go to the bathroom first..when I tried to go into the theater, the door was locked! I learned about the people involved in the making of a derby winner, the jocker, the trainer, the owner, and more! Read about famous jockeys, the history of the Derby..and took a look at the track..Wish it had not been raining

You can't go to Louisville without touring Churchill Downs and the Museum there. The tour will take you in some parts of Churchill Downs - most of which is open to the public with paid admission to the racetrack. But the tour guide will make it more fun and informative. You will see a live race if they are having races. Check race times because the first race that day was 1 pm so if you take the tour earlier you miss that. The museum is beautiful and has something for everyone. I loved the hats displays on the first floor and the other historical displays. There is a special exhibit about the legendary jockey Billy Shoemaker. Be sure and take a photo standing next to his cutout. We enjoyed the panoramic film about Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby. But they way they do it (in the round) was hard to watch - especially if you have to stand. Parents, if the place is crowded, have the kids let older folks sit. I'm surprised at the limited number of bar stools available for sitting. The film only last 20 minutes but that just wasn't as good experience as I expected.
