I am an older person- 60 plus- and I found the Koko Head Trail doable but would probably not hike it again. It is a workout-not a leisurely trek through a rainforest. You go there for a purpose and to successfully complete the challenge. Personally felt great! The view was good however there are several other hikes where the views are comparable.

Saw these stairs on an episode of Hawaii 5-0 and just had to experience them for ourselves. So if you want to test your endurance on an intense 1,048 stair climb challenge to one of the most beautiful spots in Oahu, then Koko Head Trail is the challenge for you. A climb of 1,048 stairs to Koko Head Crater, a distance of almost a mile that rises some 1,028 feet in elevation along the way. This popular endurance trail is a favourite training ground for local runners and hikers and has been known to leave many a tourist gasping for air in the quest including yours truly. At the top is the prize — a view as breath taking as the breath it required to get there. Watch out for the markers on the rails so you can track your distance. Only found out about these once I’d made the top. Keep out of the way of the serious people, both going up and coming down. There’s plenty of places to stand to the side as they blast past. If you want the T-shirt to add to your “I Climbed Diamond Head” one, then visit patrickchingart.com Enjoy the climb.
