What To Expect

Mild to Wild Rafting and Jeep Tours

Discover the spectacular La Plata Canyon (20 minutes West of Durango) and its beautiful U formation created by glaciers on one of our Colorado jeep tours. Several small waterfalls and cascading rivers follow the rugged jeep trails in the springtime along with lots of wildlife such as marmots, mule deer, elk herds, juncos, kingfishers, turkey vultures, red-tailed hawks and bald eagles. On our guided jeep tours you will see numerous wildflowers, high-alpine meadows, and avalanche gullies. Following the La Plata River (meaning “Silver” in Spanish) to La Plata City, an old mining town established in 1875, you’ll discover the remnants of old mining claims. These include a tall intact chimney left from the crew quarters, the framework of old cabins, and tailing piles from actual mining areas. Then, you’ll continue to the peak of Kennebec Pass at 12,000 feet above sea level (also above tree-line).

I’ve been on a lot of tours and this tour, particularly Tosh, the guide, have far surpassed most of my experiences. Tosh’s life experiences as a mountaineer, hiker, wildlife biologist... contributed so much to our experience. He was willing to stop for photo opps whenever we wanted and was such a great driver/guide. Tosh is very knowledgeable of the surrounding mountains (he’s backpacked/hiked a large number of them) and is everything we could have ever asked for in a guide. My husband and I weren’t really super excited about this tour after talking to another couple who had done it the day before. Tosh turned all that around. It was the highlight of our 2 weeks in Colorado and a great way to spend our last morning on Durango. As a plus, we were lucky to be the only couple scheduled for the morning so we had Tosh all to ourselves! He stopped so we could taste wild raspberries, stopped for a Skunk Weed break😉, and numerous picture stops. I can’t say enough about Tosh and this tour. It’s a must do if you’re in Durango!
