The guide was very entertaining in his presentation of facts. I enjoyed his use of the native gullah language, it made the experience all the more impressive.

Damon is an extremely knowledgeable and passionate historian and storyteller. He welcomed questions throughout the tour and what I think some may have viewed as a ā€œstrictā€ demeanor, I recognized as a desire to educate as the expert and treat the stories being told with the respect they deserved. If you are looking for a historic walking tour of Charleston more focused on design and architecture, this will not deliver what you are hoping for (though you can certainly appreciate the beauty of the city as you move through it). But as a first-time visitor, especially, Iā€™d find it hard to experience the city without acknowledging the very real part of its history - the many people and cultures - so many tours donā€™t address.

The tour was very informative and quite an learning experience. When taking tours in Charleston it is always a bonus to get the author of books as your tour guide because they've done various amounts of research and are quite knowledgeable on the subject matter. Damon Fordham was great.
