Lower Loop Van Tour from West Yellowstone: Grand Prismatic and Old Faithful

Overview
This Active Van Tour is a great way to see Yellowstone National Park beginning in the fun gateway town of West Yellowstone. The early morning part of the tour explores wildlife haunts in the famous Shadow Canyon of the Madison River. This area is home to bear and elk. Later we hike to an overlook of the famous Grand Prismatic Hot Springs. If you don't feel like walking we find a safe, scenic spot for you to wait for the group near the van. Next we explore the Old Faithful area, including some time at the famous Old Faithful Inn. We continue over the continental divide at Isa Lake and down to the West Thumb Geyser Basin on Yellowstone Lake for a view of some spectacular lakeside thermal pools. Continuing our drive along Yellowstone Lake we arrive in the Hayden Valley where big herds of bison roam. Finally, we arrive at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone to view the canyon and the amazing falls (one is almost 200 feet tall!). The day concludes back at West Yellowstone.

We took the tour on the last week of August when most children were back at school. Of the 12 of us on the tour, it was mostly seniors. Meg was our tour guide. Although she was only there for the summer she knew her stuff and was great. We've been to Yellowstone before and this tour pretty much covered the same stops. The most unusual part was after a nice quiet lunch by a lake, Meg said the most exciting part of the tour was probably over. We loaded into the bus and as we started to drive away someone shouted...deer. It was really a young elk swimming in a little pond. What took a few minutes to see was that the reason it was in the pond was 2 wolfs tracking it. The way the wolfs worked as a team was incredible. One would swim into the lake and the other would roam the shore. The elk tried several times to make a run for it but the wolfs were faster. After about 45 minutes, the elk finally did run into the woods. We couldn't see it but I don't think things ended well for the elk. I'm sure that doesn't happen every tour but it gave us something we will never forget. Meg was nice enough to change the schedule so we could see everything.

From the moment the day trip started you could feel the enthusiasm, excitement and extensive knowledge of Yellowstone that was shared by the group. We laughed, saw beautiful areas of Yellowstone and had the best 8 hours that just flew by. I would definitely go on another adventure with this tour group.

We really enjoyed this tour. This was our first time to Yellowstone, and we enjoyed the experience. We got to see a bison not long after coming into the park, and we saw a few others, the canyon and waterfall, the grand prismatic and old faithful were my favorite parts of the tour. Meg was very knowledgable and we enjoyed her as a guide.
