What To Expect

Adventures on the Gorge

Meet your rafting trip leader at the departure point. You will listen to a brief orientation and get your gear (personal flotation device, helmet and paddle). Then, you will have a 30-minute ride on a school bus down to the river put-in. Your guide will go over additional instructions once you get in the raft. The trip begins with a few smaller class I-III rapids as you ease into paddling and working as a team. Then, you hit some bigger rapids rated class IV-V. About half way through the trip, your trip will pull over and eat a deli-style lunch on the shore. After lunch, you will continue downstream into the heart of the Gorge. Here you’ll go through several rapids rated class III-V. Between rapids, there is time for swimming, floating and maybe (based on water levels) jumping off of rocks. The trip ends just past the New River Gorge Bridge.

Adventures on the Gorge was recommended by a friend who has been a white water rafting guide. My husband and our two teenage grandsons did the four-hour morning trip. The actual time on the water is more like 2 hours. The boys were a little apprehensive about going but once they got started they smiled from start to finish. It was super, super fun for them. They loved the guide David and got to know everyone in the boat, which holds 8 people. Near the end, the 13-year-old was in the front of the boat with his hands in the air grinning from ear to ear. Instructions are very detailed before starting and all equipment is provided. They are very safety conscious.

This was our first time rafting. Doug and the rest of the guides made the trip very fun! The lunch provided was really good. I would recommend this as a great family activity for teenagers. Adventures on the Gorge is top notch!

Our guide JV is "the man"!! Kept us informed about some of the technicalities of running "a line" through the rapids. His knowledge of the river was a comfort for a new rafter when the roar of the water was a little intimidating. He gave us a big bang for our buck and kept us safe too. The River was over 3 feet above average but he still knew where all the bad hidden rocks and rollers were hidden. Got a lot of good local West Virginia history while gliding the smooth water. What a rush. I feel like a "bad ass" now and I am Coming back next year!
