What To Expect
1
Adventures on the Gorge
Meet your rafting trip leader at the departure point. You will listen to a brief orientation and get your gear (personal flotation device, helmet and paddle). Then, you will have a 30-minute ride on a school bus down to the river put-in. Your guide will go over additional instructions once you get in the raft. The trip begins with a few smaller class I-III rapids as you ease into paddling and working as a team. Then, you hit some bigger rapids rated class IV-V. About half way through the trip, your trip will pull over and eat a deli-style lunch on the shore. After lunch, you will continue downstream into the heart of the Gorge. Here you’ll go through several rapids rated class III-V.  Between rapids, there is time for swimming, floating and maybe (based on water levels) jumping off of rocks. The trip ends just past the New River Gorge Bridge.

Okay, despite having to get up early (not my cup of tea) & throwing up half the time, this was still an amazing trip. If you're thinking about a whitewater rafting trip, this is absolutely perfect! Our guide, Dan, was so cool, friendly, & knowledgeable. Class V rapids, flying over the waves, & he got us through it, none of us falling out, unless we chose to. Swimming through some of the rapids is an option. Very professional, lunch is available, & they take care of everything. Float under the New River Gorge bridge,& get a feeling of just how powerful mother nature's fury really is. Its definitely a humbling experience that I would definitely do again. Next time, though, I'm taking Dramamine!

After completing this trip I had some concerns - first, most of your safety instructions come after boarding the bus, making it difficult to hear & focus, as the bus is bumpy & winding down a very curvy road (with windows down) Secondly, we were not informed that we would be carrying our rafts down to the water on stairs that could be slippery & back up to the buses after completing the trip. The rafts are not light, even with all hands on deck. Having rafted in WY & CO, I did not expect this as it has never been an expectation before. I feel that communication was not thorough. However, I will say that even after today’s events (falling in, several of us), the guides were knowledgeable & did get us completely through safely. Just proceed with caution & know your limits. I would also not recommend this for a 12 year old as stated on their site unless they have experienced something of this magnitude before.

We spent 4 full days at Adventures on the Gorge and loved every minute of it. The activities are amazing, food and accommodations were top notch and the staff were excellent. We will definitely be going back. The best vacation we've had yet!
