What To Expect

Adventures on the Gorge
Meet your rafting trip leader at the departure point. You will listen to a brief orientation and get your gear (personal flotation device, helmet and paddle). Then, you will have a 30-minute ride on a school bus down to the river put-in. Your guide will go over additional instructions once you get in the raft. The trip begins with a few smaller class I-III rapids as you ease into paddling and working as a team. Then, you hit some bigger rapids rated class IV-V. About half way through the trip, your trip will pull over and eat a deli-style lunch on the shore. After lunch, you will continue downstream into the heart of the Gorge. Here you’ll go through several rapids rated class III-V.  Between rapids, there is time for swimming, floating and maybe (based on water levels) jumping off of rocks. The trip ends just past the New River Gorge Bridge.

We’ve been using AOTG for many years for rafting and other activities, and it’s great every time. We did the BRD (Best run of the day) and KP was our guide. We had a great time on the lower New in a smaller raft. Unfortunately our New River Dries trip got cancelled because the water was too low, but they helped us reschedule to the ropes course. A great trip!

Do not go to the New River Gorge and not go rafting. We have been rafting several times in several states and this was one of the best. Doug is an excellent guide.

They gave a safety talk first on the ride over to the river which scared me a little and made me expect to fall out of the raft more easily. No one on our raft fell out since our guide gave great direction and told us everything that was going to or needed to happen when going over a rapid. There is a lot more time spent on calm water during this trip than I expected but that made it a relaxing trip and we were given lots of info on the area during that time. The water was low which made it easier to see the oncoming rocks and avoid an incident. I would do this tour again in a heart beat.
