Luau Kalamaku with Buffet Dinner & Show

Overview
Welcoming guests to Kauai since 2007, Luau Kalamaku is Hawaii's only luau show performed “in-the-round,” offering optimal views of the stage. Witness the unearthing of the pig from the traditional imu (underground oven) and enjoy a hula lesson. A craft fair featuring unique items by local artisans awaits on the sprawling lawn. Feast on a delicious buffet of local and familiar favorites and enjoy a Mai Tai from the open bar. The 45-minute main show tells the amazing story of the ancient Hawaiian legend of Kalamaku “child of the new land." Through laughter, fear, seduction and fire, a new legacy is created, born from the cherished seeds of their ancestors. The theatrical luau show culminates with a fantastic fire dream featuring fire poi balls and traditional fire knife dancing.

This was one of the worst experiences we had during our time in Hawaii. We were on the cruise Pride of America, and we purchased this luau as one of our shore excursions. The seating area for the luau is HUGE, with dozens of tables seating 10 people each. For some reason, the owners of this luau decided they could jam in 6 more tables of 10 people into a location that felt like we were sitting in the parking lot. We were so far away from the stage that we couldn't see anything. Upon arrival we were shown to our ridiculous table (even though we were one of the first to arrive), and we walked around the grounds to view the vendors. We then came back to the table and ate the buffet dinner (we were the first group of tables sent to the buffet), and immediately upon finishing our meal we left the luau and took an Uber back to the cruise ship. What an incredible waste of money. Note to the owners: Instead of seeing dollar signs and packing in another 60 people for each show, realize that this will lead to negative reviews because of the poor experience you are giving.

The plantation grounds are beautiful, the train ride around the grounds is nice and the stop at the pigs is entertaining. The parking and walk to the dinning area is not far and pleasant though since it's in a grassy area I could see it miserable in the rain. The shopping stands were nice. the imu ceremony of cooking the Kalula pig and pulling it out of the ground was not announced so we missed it. The buffet lines were short but the selection of traditional Hawaiian dishes was very limited. The entertainment during the show was sporadic but pleasant. The stage for the show is "in the round" and there wasn't a bad seat in the area. The show was informative and entertaining. Sorry, but we enjoyed the Smith's family Lu'au more.
