Manatees/Sunset/Bioluminescence Tour

Overview
Experience everything the wildlife refuge has to offer with three distinct experiences packed into one three-hour tour! Launch your kayak in the daylight and surround yourself with Florida’s most-loved endangered species, West Indian Manatees! Sit back while the gentle giants roll, sniff, and nuzzle all around you. Dolphins are also active this time of day as they wrangle their dinner in the adjacent cove.

Next, head out to Bird Island, a federally protected rookery, to watch hundreds of birds soar in overhead. Ibis, herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, and roseate spoonbills and more all glide in their flocks to nest for the night. Be lulled into serenity by the gently rocking kayak as the sun descends for the night in the pinks, oranges, and reds of sunset.

Finally, the tour culminates in the season’s bioluminescent experience, whether it be summer bioluminescence, winter comb jelly bioluminescence, or a star-studded moonlit sky.

We really enjoyed our afternoon-evening on the water. Bob was a great guide and extremely knowledgeable. We didn't see manatees as it was too cold, but he gave us some advice as to where we could find them. Bird Island during sunset was amazing. It looked like a scene from a nature movie. We got a great view of dolphins and a few gators as well.

My friend & I went on this tour with Brian as our guide - we were the only two out on the water with him for the tour on a Wednesday night & boy did it turn out to be a real treat! Brian was very knowledgable, he had much to share about the wildlife we encountered - from the mangroves to the roseate spoonbills - you can easily tell he loves his job. We caught a glimpse of a shy manatee, shared the same water as a baby alligator, and were surrounded by dolphins playing in the distance during a beautiful sunset. Again, a BEAUTIFUL sunset. With the sun setting... it was so wonderful and humbling to just sit there and take it all in. We were delighted by the comb jellyfish - we did not see much of the dinoflagellates as peak season for them is basically over. We felt very safe paddling in our kayaks after the sun had set - Brian made sure of it. This tour was probably the highlight of my holiday - I highly recommend it. Thanks Brian & A Day Away Kayak Tours!

We saw it all; Manatees, wide variety of birds, the sunset and both bioluminescent dinoflagellates and comb jellies. Fascinating evening. Great trip and great guide (Brian). Will do it again!
