Manatees/Sunset/Bioluminescence Tour

Overview
Experience everything the wildlife refuge has to offer with three distinct experiences packed into one three-hour tour! Launch your kayak in the daylight and surround yourself with Florida’s most-loved endangered species, West Indian Manatees! Sit back while the gentle giants roll, sniff, and nuzzle all around you. Dolphins are also active this time of day as they wrangle their dinner in the adjacent cove.

Next, head out to Bird Island, a federally protected rookery, to watch hundreds of birds soar in overhead. Ibis, herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, and roseate spoonbills and more all glide in their flocks to nest for the night. Be lulled into serenity by the gently rocking kayak as the sun descends for the night in the pinks, oranges, and reds of sunset.

Finally, the tour culminates in the season’s bioluminescent experience, whether it be summer bioluminescence, winter comb jelly bioluminescence, or a star-studded moonlit sky.

I took my husband on this tour for his birthday, and we both loved it. Our tour guide, Chris, was laid back, but ready to share knowledge or lend a hand whenever we needed or asked. He brought extra water and bug spray to share, and had a comfort and enthusiasm spending time on the water that was really heartwarming :). We were kayaking almost the entire time (5:45pm-9:15pm) with a short break to get up and stretch our legs before we did the nighttime bioluminescence part of the tour. Our group was small--just 5 of us plus our guide, which was preferable to the larger tour group that was also kayaking with a different company that largely stayed in other parts of the water so we didn't ever feel crowded. We had spectacular weather on our tour, but while the cooler temps and breeze kept the mosquitoes at bay, the bioluminescence was not as vibrant as I have witnessed in the past. Even so, we got close encounters with manatee, dolphin, comb jellyfish, lots of birds, and mullet! The night sky was lit up and we could see the Milky Way. Really, the only thing we missed out on was a shooting star and a nighttime rocket launch from Cape Canaveral. We even had mullet jump in our boat after dark which was a fun surprise, though I smelled like fish the entire way home! Definitely bring a towel and a change of clothes--just in case you need it. I got more wet sitting in the front of the boat than my husband did sitting in the back. We would definitely do this again.

We had an awesome time. We were able to pet the manatees that came up to us! The bioluminescent was also a beautiful site to see! Bob was an awesome guide. Very informative and funny. I would take this tour once a week of I could!
