I stayed at Pod 51 in early Dec and joined Streetwise walking tour to meatpacking district on Dec 7. It's a very nice and pretty side of the city that I wouldn't have visited if it wasn't for this tour. The tour started on 14th Street and we walked to Chelsea market, High Line park and Greenwich Village. Andrew the guide (also the co-founder of the company) was very resourceful and friendly. He shared a lot of interesting local information. We even got to visit the shooting sites of Sex and the City! It was raining throughout the tour - not so great for walking but Andrew totally made the day. The tour was on a tip-only basis. Instead of other paid tours where the guide asks for gratuities, Andrew actually said review was more important than the gratuities (and so here I am!) For me, it certainly deserved a 5-star review. If I am back in NYC in the future, I might consider joining other tours with Streetwise. P.S. Go ask Andrew if you are hungry by the end of the tour and he has good restaurants to share! He personally brought me to a nearby seafood place after the tour which I greatly enjoyed.

Olivia, Thanks so much for the review. I'm glad you liked not just the tour but also the restaurant I recommended. Just to give credit where credit is due, your tour wasn't free or tip-based. Your hotel, The Pod Hotel, fully pays for the tour as a free perk for the guests. Thanks again. It was great showing you the Greenwich Village and Meat Packing District. See you on your next visit!

We only had three days in New York and we wanted to maximize all of it. We looked at all possible ways to be introduced to the city and picked Streetwise. We're glad we did. We warmed to Patrick immediately and he promised a less traveled path and didn't disappoint. At 9am on day one, Patrick met us at our hotel, which was on the Upper Westside (note my new knowledge of Manhattan), asked us a few questions about our wishes (he got vague responses) and the tour started fifty feet from the hotel. We started on 79th St. and finished a block from the World Trade Centre. Patrick was constantly adapting the tour as we reacted to the different things along the way. Being frugal, I was a bit put off by the cost, but it was money well spent. After a tour of “our” neighbourhood, Patrick showed us how to buy the best subway pass for our stay, how to find the subway from any street, and for the rest of the day, we hopped on and off the subway, transferred to different lines and at the end of the day, we were ready to strike off on our own. We had to, to get back to our hotel. This tour prepared us to spend the next two days, purposefully going where we planned to go. We used the subway to go everywhere. We never got lost once, although we were a bit confused a few times.

When I told my brother I was going to New York for a week he said I HAD to do a walking tour as soon as I arrived. And I'm so glad he did. It's a great way to get your bearings in the big apple, see parts of Manhattan that you wouldn't normally see, and learn how to use the subways! I found Streetwise through trip advisor and the reviews were good. I went to their website, and the Manhattan walking tour sounded perfect (there are some other areas of New York that they do tours on as well), emailed them and went from there. I took the tour with my boyfriend, 24, mum, 61, and dad, 62, and was worried that it might be difficult to please everybody's interests. But Dan and Andrew were great from the start. They offer a really personal experience of Manhattan and offer some great tips on where to go and what to do while you're in town. Thoughtful from start to end. They met us at our hotel, pointed out bathrooms along the way, checked when we were hungry, and then took us back to our hotel once the day was done. The Streetwise New York Tours are great. I highly recommend you start your trip to New York with a Manhattan Streetwise walking tour.
