I and partner took the tours offered by the Pod51 Hotel which were for hosts free. The tour guide Sonya was very nice and friendly person that always tried to help everybody through the tour but also afterward. Her knowledge about the historical past and present was amazing and her local tips for food and museums were great. We really enjoyed the tours as we seen a lot of things from different parts of NY (Brooklyn, Chinatown, Lower eastside...) but also have learned about the city history. Would recommend to everybody who is not afraid of little walk and has spare 2,5 hours.

My daughter and I went on a guided walking tour of Brooklyn and DUMBO. It was really the highlight of our 5 day stay in NYC. The tour guide was not only extremely knowledgeable about the architecture, history, sites to see, restaurants to visit, but was also extremely vigilant about keeping us safe and together. She constantly counted heads during our subway ride, while walking the streets, and after short bathroom breaks. She brought us to the absolute best view of Manhattan! The tour lasted two and half hours: we found it to be a perfect length. And best of all, at the end of the tour, she spoke to each group member and made sure he/she knew how to get to their next destination. My daughter and I chose to walk back to Manhattan via the Brooklyn bridge. Finding the entry spot to access the bridge was no easy feat, but our guide Sonya was patient and stayed until everyone was at ease with the route. Our tour was included in the price of our hotel room (Pod 51), but i understand that they offer private tours as well.

A small walking tour eliminates the feeling of being the "elephant in the room", by avoiding that clumsy tourist syndrome where one is stepping on tradition and good manners by doing/saying things that locals would never. It's easy to adapt to the scenery when a local gives you a historical perspective and a grand tour of the neighborhood through the optics and ways of a well studied local. Thank you to Gregory for the perspective and experience!
