Join retired Police Chief D'Ambra for the original Historic Candlelight Walking Tour.Take a evening stroll through the beautiful Historic Waterfront of Old Manteo. Chief began the tour in 2004. Join him and explore 450+ years of living history. His stories will entertain and fascinate you as he shares a mix of the many "firsts", tales, & history that makes Dare County, "The Land of Beginnings". His stories of The Lost Colony, Pirates, The Underground Railroad, The Wright Brothers, and our modern era will delight everyone.He even shares personal stories of the real Mayberry, USA that inspired the classic TV series "The Andy Griffith Show". He shares his relationship with the celebrities and many space heroes who have made Manteo's history unique. This tour has been featured on PBS show "NC Weekend". Police Chief D’Ambra is so passionate in his retelling of some of Manteo’s most historic moments. It was incredible to hear the varied moments through over 400 years of history that tie this small island to America’s past. D’Ambra is engaging and a pleasure to listen to. His purpose in passing on stories from the town’s past for future generations is noteworthy in how heartfelt his passion for the subject is.

I booked this tour for my parents trip and they loved it! Chief D was an amazing guide and had so much knowledge and an incredible way of sharing! Your parents are now forever a part of our living history and wonderful folks. Such lovely people with a shared passion for our unique history. Originating the only historical walking tour here in 2004 really open the doors discovery for many guests who have joined us over the years. Most of our guests are not aware of the pivotal role Manteo has played in our nation's many "firsts" before they take our tour. As many times that I've told the story over the years, I am still amazed by our unique place in history. It was a real joy to have your parents join me.
