I’m an avid hiker who couldn’t wait to be on a glacier. My mom is a 69-year-old non-hiker who was a bit apprehensive to hike on ice. We both really enjoyed this tour. Our guide on the glacier, Chris, was really patient with everyone and very knowledgeable and passionate about the glacier. Our driver and tour guide, Derek, was really knowledgeable and passionate about the Alaskan history and culture, so his commentary on the drive (which was almost as stunningly spectacular as the glacier), was far more interesting than the commentary we got on other tours. From the time we booked the trip to even AFTER we got off the tour bus, it was clear that Lori, Derek, and Chris were all passionate about sharing the beauty and adventure of Alaska with others and ensuring every single one of us had a wonderful time. I can’t say enough positive things about this company.

We thoroughly enjoyed having Lori as our 907 Tours guide for the trip to Matanuska Glacier. She provided interesting commentary on our drive to the glacier, and she joined us for our glacier hike. She even cheered on some members of our group who found the hike to be more challenging than expected. Before taking this trip, we poured over descriptions and reviews of the hike to understand what we were getting ourselves into. The descriptions of the hike were quite varied, and it was hard to get a good understanding of how hard it would be. In the summer, you hike over a rocky and sometimes sticky terrain to get to the glacier. (Tours mentioning the sled ride are only available in the winter.) The hike on the glacier required us to take large steps uphill, which our guide sometimes had to cut for us before we could move forward, and we climbed up and down hills several times (8+ stories up). There were several stops for explanations and pictures, which did allow for brief rests. The hike is described as moderate. As someone who does not hike regularly, I would say that the hike was quite challenging. While I loved the opportunity to walk on the glacier, it is not something I would plan to do again.
