We highly recommend this tour! Not only did we see a lot of whales, but we learned so much about their behavior. Plus, we also saw other wildlife. Even before we left the harbor, we passed a green sea turtle, and later in the trip we saw spinner dolphins.
Although there was a lot of whale activity far in the distance, we had plenty to keep us busy quite close. Moms and babies are always a great treat, especially when the baby is feeling frisky and breaches repeatedly for fun.
Another compelling experience was watching a “competition group.” We’d never heard of that and were amazed to see multiple male whales following one female, trying to impress her enough for her to choose him to mate with her.
We also had the fantastic luck of two male whales coming within just a few feet of the boat. Another highlight was listening to the whale chatter through a hydrophone. We never imagined it would be that noisy underwater!
I’d been dreaming for years to go to Maui to see the humpbacks, and this exceeded my expectations. A lot of the credit goes to the wonderful crew who were knowledgeable and personable.
