This was an excellent experience! Anna was an amazing guide, if you have a choice...go for her. You know that feeling you get? The one when you lose a part of your soul every time your dad yells at you about leaving chicken noodle soup on the washing machine while I take a shower thinking I finished it all already? It's like the opposite of that. She dealt with a loud unruly michigan family with ease and decorum...which is already a show of strength. The sites? Gorgeous. Nothing you ever seen before. The night sky is something else that high up. Seriously...it's worth it.

Our driver Riley was very funny, giving us bits of history and information about Hilo/Mauna Kea mixed with his own experience growing up and living in Hilo; I loved the personal flavor his stories added to the drive (and it was a LONG drive). Sunset was beautiful from up there. There was a shadow over all of Hilo which was enormous. The telescopes were cool to look at, though we could not go inside. After we were done with sunset at the summit, we drove down a bit to star gaze, which was an amazing view. It was so clear up there we could even see the Milky Way. The drivers were very helpful pointing out constellations and stars, setting up a telescope to see Saturn and Jupiter, taking photos of everyone in the group, and setting up snacks and hot beverages. I don’t think I have ever seen so many stars in my life before. Truly a once in a lifetime experience!

The sunset at the summit and the stargazing was so beautiful. When you’re at the top, the clouds below look like ocean waves. It also looks like you’re on mars with all the telescopes. You can see the Milky Way with the naked eye!! They take night pics for you and don’t charge you extra for it. Lots of snacks and hot drinks at the top to keep you warm and fed. They also provide warm jackets but I recommend having warm socks and pants (or double leggings). My friend and I didn’t get altitude sickness. I think there was only 1 person on our tour who felt dizzy. Recommend drinking a lot of water night before and day of. I had some packets of emergency vitamin C packets the night before and day of, ate a burger and piece of cake for lunch before the trip. Not sure if that helped but I was totally fine despite altitude. Could still breathe deeply at the top. The telescope they provide wasn’t that clear and I didn’t see much (I saw more celestial stuff on another tour the next night on a different telescope) but it was totally fine. Still totally recommend the tour. Absolutely breathtaking.
