We have been to Alaska many times, and one of the attractions for us is the lack of crowds and freedom to explore. We tend to go the opposite direction of the cruise ship folks (no offense!). Our one exception is day cruising when we are in Valdez or Seward. The opportunity to comfortably see calving, 60-story high glaciers, breaching whales, playful porpoises, lazy seals/sea lions, and countless marine birds is one not to be passed up. The scenery that the coastline provides is spectacular, as well. Besides SS out of Valdez, we have done similar cruises with two different outfits in Seward. All are worth it, but SS has really nice vessels that tend to be less crowded (likely due to Valdez's out-of-the-way location). It's so nice being on a viewing deck without people, literally climbing over people to get a shot of a speck sea otter with their iPhone! Staff is knowledgeable and friendly and the meal was quite good.

We loved this cruise. The ship was in very good shape and clean. The captain was so knowledgeable in her narration. Amazing how this huge enclosed catamaran can maneuver.

We went on the Mears Glacier cruise with Stan Stephens on 7/14/2019 ! We were the only family on board with small children . The staff was absolutely outstanding. Most of them appeared to be Highschool or college age kids and they were so attentive and entertaining. Halfway through the cruise the little ones got restless and they were right on top of it bringing crayons and coloring pages and asking if they wanted to sit in the captains chair etc Besides all of this I have to give them a HUGE shoutout catering to my dietary needs . I have celiac disease and so avoiding wheat and gluten is a must for me . I am always prepared and brought my own lunch and snacks . When lunch was being served I told them I had celiacs and without missing a beat the young lady announced “ oh I can do gluten free “ . Not only was I able to eat lunch with everyone else they even had a soup just for me when a snack was served a few hours later . I was and am still highly impressed ! Way to go Stan Stephens and crew ! I would also like to mention that unlike some of their competitors they do offer a discounted admission for children which was very much appreciated . Thank you for a wonderful time !
