Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Museum

Relive Mel Fisher's battles with the government to retain the artifacts they found - all the way to the US Supreme Court. A true folk legend right in Key West where it all happened! See the amazing treasure in the Spanish Treasure Galleons galleries discovered by Mel Fisher and his crew, plus so much more! The thought provoking Slave Ship and Key West African Cemetery exhibits provide a stark look into the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Key West’s unique role in it. Discover the relics found aboard the Henrietta Marie, an English merchant slave ship dating back to 1699. The wreck as discovered in 1972, but was only partially excavated until years later. Hear about the story behind this important piece of history. Learn about Spanish Coins in the New World, the Real Pirates of the Caribbean, and the Science of Shipwrecks. The Mel Fisher Maritime Museum turned out to be far more interesting than I expected. I originally hadn't planned to visit, but it was recommended on the tour of Fort Jefferson in Dry Tortugas National Park. I decided to check it out! There is a lot of information packed into the museum. Of course, there is a lot about finding and recovering treasure. But there's also information on the trade route and slavery. I enjoyed my visit and highly recommend it.

It is interesting to hear the story about Mel Fisher and walk around the first floor; however is it worth the price they charge - NO. (You learn all about salvage and ship wrecks in and around Key West at the Ship Wreck museum.) The first floor includes his search and finally achieving his goal of finding the wreck he was looking for. The second floor has a variety of historical information in addition to the salvage / importance of salvage / educational aspects / relationship with Cuba.

My fiancé and I got the behind the scenes lab tour and did it before touring the exhibits and it was SO worth it. Super knowledgeable and informative behind the scenes tour of their lab. They let us see what they’re working on and actually held some artifacts. The exhibits were amazing and definitely worth the money. Love this place
