For the amount of treasure recovered from Atocha, it would be better to see more items in a better managed museum. The staff did not seem welcoming from the female person outside with the admission stickers to the male person who was mostly behind a raised desk area on the first floor to the male person who walked around the upstairs not engaging with anyone, the whole place felt unwelcoming. . The signage is descriptive and educational. The video in the first room as you enter was supposed to run every 15 minutes according to the sign. It never came on. The second floor describes underwater archaeology probably so it meets school field trip qualifications. The room on the Cuban missile crisis mentions how Castro defeated the previous leader who is mentioned as corrupt but no mention is made about the regime under Castro. The signs describing democracy, then communism, then socialism could use revision in its definition of socialism. Socialism is not the rosy picture of life that the words promote. Maybe it’s a local attitude in Key West and the sign was written to promote that attitude for South Florida. I had also read you are allowed to touch a silver bar from the treasure. We did not see that option.Truthfully, we enjoyed the History of Diving Museum more. It is over 1 hour 40 minutes away from Key West.

My experience was awful! The whole time the mask nazi’s were hounding me about how I was wear my mask . The were threatening and not nice about it. I thought Florida was open for business and massless. I felt like I just stepped off the plane in Russia. This was my fourth visit to the Mel Fisher museum and I can honestly say the experience has greatly declined. I can no longer recommend this activity to others. I will never be back

Wow, was I pleasantly surprised by this museum. The plentiful artifacts and beauties of the Spanish treasure ship, the story of the dogged search and discovery, a whole additional exhibit on pirates, and yet another on the slave trade make this one of the better small museums I have visited around the world. We spent nearly 2 hours there. Be sure you don’t mistakenly go to the kitschier “Shipwreck” museum nearby. That might be OK for kids, but if you like a museum with merit and sound research, go to Mel Fisher.
