Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Museum

Relive Mel Fisher's battles with the government to retain the artifacts they found - all the way to the US Supreme Court. A true folk legend right in Key West where it all happened! See the amazing treasure in the Spanish Treasure Galleons galleries discovered by Mel Fisher and his crew, plus so much more! The thought provoking Slave Ship and Key West African Cemetery exhibits provide a stark look into the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Key West’s unique role in it. Discover the relics found aboard the Henrietta Marie, an English merchant slave ship dating back to 1699. The wreck as discovered in 1972, but was only partially excavated until years later. Hear about the story behind this important piece of history. Learn about Spanish Coins in the New World, the Real Pirates of the Caribbean, and the Science of Shipwrecks. You can even take a lab tour and see how history is revealed through conservation every day! Come celebrate 30 years of treasure with the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum!

This place is very unique to visit. They allowed my family in for free because I am military. The exhibit was excellent. You can even buy some of the recovered gold and silver. We even met the grandson of Mel Fisher. Had a great time.

In addition to some of the treasures found on both the local 1715 plate Fleet and from the Atocha off of Key West, this Museum is a Chronicle of a life. We thought we knew a little bit about Mel Fisher but it turns out not so much. Make sure you start with the video it makes the rest of it make a lot more sense. A good way to spend an hour while you're in the area.

I was very excited to take my husband here on our visit. There's soo much historical value in this building. Not only do you learn about Mel and his family but what about all the time and dedication that was involved in his discoveries. On the upper floor you can read about the pirates and the women of that time that joined that life. I'd save yourself from the populated tourist traps and stick with the top notch educational experience.
