Mendenhall Glacier Lake Canoe Tour

Overview
Experience the beauty of the Alaskan wilderness on this 3.5-4 hour adventure to the Mendenhall Glacier. This adventure starts off at the cruise ship docks as an expert guide will transfer the guaranteed, small group on a narrated 30 minute journey to the West Glacier boat launch in the Tongass National Forest. Guests gear up in top quality waterproof gear and after a quick paddle lesson, will launch the canoe onto the Mendenhall Lake to start the journey. Surrounded by steep cliffs filled with Arctic terns, mountain goats, porcupines, and other wildlife; enjoy the serenity of this adventure deep into Alaska. Feel the cool brisk air coming off the glacier as the guide safely navigates the canoe to the best viewpoints of the blue crevasses and seracs on the toe of the Mendenhall Glacier. Be one of the few to step away from the crowds and get face to face with glacier. This Tour is canoeing only and DOES NOT INCLUDE hiking on a glacier.

Great experience canoeing the lake, seeing the falls, and then walking around the sides of the glacier. The event was made even better by our AMAZING and fun guides, Kevin and Bryce. We booked this at the last second when our cruise ship excursion was cancelled because of bad weather and it turned out to be on of our favorite parts of our whole Alaska trip!

The canoe tour is the only way to get close to the glacier. It was fun and not overly strenuous. You also get a good view of the nearby waterfall. Our guide Trelby was terrific.

We got very lucky with the weatherā€¦ after several days of poor weather on our cruise, our visit to Juneau was sunny and warm. The time we spent out on the lake was glorious, made better by our guide, Kevin. His passion for the work he was doing shone extra brightly that day (due to the weather, I imagine), and you could feel the love he has for the glacier and the area itā€™s in. He was fun and informative. His joy is infectious. As the glacier has changed quite drastically in the 14 years since I last saw it, I canā€™t recommend this tour enough. Itā€™s the only way to see it properly, besides maybe helicopter, as the views from the Visitor Centre are probably minimal these days. Donā€™t be fooled though, just because this is a guided tour doesnā€™t mean you donā€™t have to work for these views. A bit of prior paddling experience would probably serve you well on this tour but isnā€™t a requirement. It can be hard work with the wind coming off the glacier, but so very worth it!
