Mendenhall Glacier Lake Canoe Tour

Overview
Experience the beauty of the Alaskan wilderness on this 3.5-4 hour adventure to the Mendenhall Glacier. This adventure starts off at the cruise ship docks as an expert guide will transfer the guaranteed, small group on a narrated 30 minute journey to the West Glacier boat launch in the Tongass National Forest. Guests gear up in top quality waterproof gear and after a quick paddle lesson, will launch the canoe onto the Mendenhall Lake to start the journey. Surrounded by steep cliffs filled with Arctic terns, mountain goats, porcupines, and other wildlife; enjoy the serenity of this adventure deep into Alaska. Feel the cool brisk air coming off the glacier as the guide safely navigates the canoe to the best viewpoints of the blue crevasses and seracs on the toe of the Mendenhall Glacier. Be one of the few to step away from the crowds and get face to face with glacier. This Tour is canoeing only and DOES NOT INCLUDE hiking on a glacier.

What a fun adventure! Itā€™s slightly vigorous, but plenty of breaks. It was misty and cool (hand warmers helped) but the glacier did not disappoint. We had a group of 7 with 4 teenage boys. Matt was our guide and was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

I'm so glad we did our research to find this tour that's off the beaten path! we had time before leaving to walk around juneau and then Lena picked us up from the visitors center. she drove us to the park lot while providing very interesting information about juneau from a local perspective! they had the option to use their rain jacket and pants and also gave us glacier gloves and boots for wading in the water. we headed the boat (we don't have too much experience) but it was still very well organized and i felt that everyone in the boat was well equipped for the row. it was about 5 miles round trip with several breaks. we got so close to the glacier!! we also saw an iceberg and the waterfall. definitely the best glacier tour we could think of. you get to actually see the structure of the ice! definitely recommend going sooner rather than later as Lena showed us the points of recession and it seems at risk in the coming years.

Our guide, Matt, was great. Itā€™s fun paddling to the glacier and waterfall. For a foggy day that our heli bear tour and flight to Haines were cancelled, this was a great alternative to do something in Juneau.
