Overview
Experience the beauty of the Alaskan wilderness on this 3.5-4 hour adventure to the Mendenhall Glacier. This adventure starts off at the cruise ship docks as an expert guide will transfer the guaranteed, small group on a narrated 30 minute journey to the West Glacier boat launch in the Tongass National Forest. Guests gear up in top quality waterproof gear and after a quick paddle lesson, will launch the canoe onto the Mendenhall Lake to start the journey. We highly recommend this tour! It couldn't have gone any smoother. I had to call the morning of the tour from our ship, due to some last minute schedule changes imposed by the cruise line. Ryan was quick to accommodate the changes over the phone and quickly arranged it so that all guests that had booked with them from our ship could be on the same tour in order to make it back in time for ship departure and not lose any of our tour time. Kevin met us just a short distance from the ship, and we were on his van right away, headed for the lake. He filled us in on the drive with lots of great info on Juneau. Kevin and Mike were our guides on the canoe trip, and they were both awesome - very kind, helpful, and confident with the tour. Mike had lots of great information on the glacier and about the area and could answer every question that we had. This was a fabulous way to experience some of the beauty of Juneau. The views on the lake were absolutely gorgeous. We got lots of time to take a break from rowing so that we could enjoy the views of the glacier and waterfall and get lots of great pictures. We most definitely got our money's worth and would recommend it for all ages.

Trip was amazing! We got close to the glacier and learned so many new things about the area, water and glacier. Our guide ā€œBriceā€ was amazing! I will also say, that our ship changed the departure time and the guides adjusted our tour, and dropped us off at the ship! They were professional all the way! Now, letā€™s get realā€¦ Iā€™m 58 yrs old. I donā€™t exerciseā€¦ this trip was worth it, but be aware YOU and your other passengers will do the rowing and itā€™s about 5 miles (round trip). We took lots of breaks which was good. Great motivator was it started to rain on the way back so even though we had full rain gear on our group rowed back faster. Lol. We were grateful the crew had lots of hot drinks waiting for us! Again, great tripā€¦ ps if you are taking kids or young teensā€¦ know they do now really help with true rowing and do not like being cold and wetā€¦ have fun and ask for Brice!

Our scheduled tour that was cancelled was to be on top of Mendenhall Glacier and be pulled around by the sled dogs, which would have meant we would not have been on a lake and seen the face of Mendenhall Glacier. On to the actual tour, our bus driver Kelsey was nice and safely got us to our tour, but was not so informational. Matt was our guide. I had been on over a week of tours in Alaska at this point. Matt was very informational and a good guide. To me there are two main points of interest the waterfall and the glacier. I will now compare what can be seen from the canoe vs what could be seen from the Mendenhall park. On the shore, I said is it really going to take so long to get to the glacier and a different tour guide in passing said it is not as close as you think, and she was right. From the park you can get close to the waterfall, but only from the side. From the canoe you can get pretty close to the waterfall but right in front of the waterfall. Moving on to the glacier. We were told by the lady selling the tour we would get very close to the glacier because this glacier doesnā€™t really calve, during the tour we actual just got pretty close. This can be an active tour. I will say if you want to cover any descent distance people will need to paddle pretty hard. If your primary purpose was to to see the face of the glacier, I suspect many people at the park would be disappointed. No porcupines during our tour, I wasnā€™t expecting any. The snack and warm apple cider (warm drinks) to finish things off are nice touches. If you want to see the face of the glacier I recommend this tour, it was a very good experience. Matt has refined his tour, working on perfecting it, it shows, I would specifically ask for him. Sharon in Cleveland, Matt is very much alive and may have found his calling.
