What To Expect
1
Fort Hays Old West Town and Dinner Show
The tour package starts at Fort Hays Chuckwagon where you get your all you can eat cowboy breakfast. Nothing better than home made cowboy pancakes, biscuits and gravy, sausage links with a hot cup of coffee to get the day started.
2
Mount Rushmore National Memorial
The bus departs at 9am and heads for Mount Rushmore! You will have a little over an hour to look around at your own convenience and enjoy the sites and beauty that you came to South Dakota for. We stop here first because Mount Rushmore is at it's best in the morning sun. Gutzon Borglum carved this mountain facing east towards the morning sun and intended it to be viewed this way.
3
Iron Mountain Road
After leaving Mount Rushmore we will travel along the Iron Mountain Road. A beautiful 17 mile road of breath taking scenery featuring 3 one lane tunnels that perfectly frame Mount Rushmore.
4
Custer State Park Resort
We stop for lunch inside Custer State Park at the Game Lodge and previous summer White House for president Calvin Coolidge. Try the Buffalo Stew, it's the best you will ever find!
5
Needles Highway
After lunch we depart for the Needles Hwy. This 14 mile scenic drive is sure to leave you breathless and awe struck at amazing beauty of the Black Hills. Sit back and enjoy the ride and watch the crowd gather around when we drive the bus through the Needles Eye Tunnel. With only inches to spare on each side of the bus you can relish in the fact that you are not the one driving.
6
Sylvan Lake
Take a rest stop and coffee break at the beautiful Sylvan Lake. This is among the crown jewels of Custer State Park and the beauty within it.
7
Crazy Horse Memorial
We spend about an hour at Crazy Horse Memorial. You are on your own to spend this time enjoying this piece of history in the making. Upon completion it will be the largest mountain carving in the world! Truly a piece of awe inspiring history being worked on every day.

We purchased this tour as a package including a pancake and fixings breakfast at Fort Mays and the Chuckwagon dinner and show in the evening (see separate review). The package was under US$100. This narrated tour was led by Pastor Bill, a minister from Hot Springs. The tour was an absolutely excellent way to see the Black Hills and Mt. Rushmore. The narration enriches your experience as you look out the window at the spectacular scenery rather than the road to avoid driving off in all the curves and hills. There were 3 or 4 tunnels through rock on the route we took and 3 of them were designed to frame Mt Rushmore in one of the directions of passage. The tour included a one hour stop at Mt. Rushmore, lunch in Custer park and a one hour visit to the Crazy horse pavilion where a large carving of Crazy Horse aboard his steed is under construction. Numerous prominent rock formations were described on the tour along with the history of the area by our awesome tour guide. An good buffet lunch was served at Custer Park for $14. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to see some main attractions in the area and get a flavour for the Black Hills.

I want to rate this higher and really agonized over the review but there are a few things holding me back from giving it 4 stars. We took the 1880 train from Hill City to Keystone and joined the tour in Keystone for a tour of Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer Park. Pros: We were able to get around to a lot of things without the hassle of driving ourselves. There was ample time at each stop to enjoy the monuments and surrounding areas. Our driver was informative but could have spent less time on hokey jokes and more time on what we were seeing and the important history of the area. Cons: When we got off the train in Keystone, we waited an hour and 15 minutes to be picked up and nothing was even open yet in Keystone. We just sat at the train station. Person at the train station even remarked that the tour is always late picking people up. Not good; we actually paid for dead time with nothing to see. When we were finally picked up, the bus was packed. Only seats left were the very last seats next to the bathroom. When the driver pointed things out, we couldn't see because the bathroom blocked our view (won't even go into the smell when you are literally only a foot from the bathroom). The tour isn't cheap; we paid $210 for the two of us. We thoroughly enjoyed the sites when we were able to get off the bus but the long delay in Keystone and the blocked view on the bus did impact the enjoyment of the tour. The company needs to rethink packing the bus that full.

My wife and I chose the all day tour that includes breakfast, the tour, supper, and the music show. We had a great day. The breakfast wasn't fancy but it was very tasty. The actual tour took us on an all day excursion to the Black Hills, Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and the State Park Lodge (?) for a very nice lunch. The tour guide/driver was very knowledgeable and made the day very enjoyable and informative. This tour certainly is worth the money.
