Mount Rushmore National Memorial
The bus departs at 9am and heads for Mount Rushmore! You will have a little over an hour to look around at your own convenience and enjoy the sites and beauty that you came to South Dakota for. We stop here first because Mount Rushmore is at it's best in the morning sun. Gutzon Borglum carved this mountain facing east towards the morning sun and intended it to be viewed this way.

Iron Mountain Road
After leaving Mount Rushmore we will travel along the Iron Mountain Road. A beautiful 17 mile road of breath taking scenery featuring 3 one lane tunnels that perfectly frame Mount Rushmore.
4
Custer State Park Resort
We stop for lunch inside Custer State Park at the Game Lodge and previous summer White House for president Calvin Coolidge. Try the Buffalo Stew, it's the best you will ever find!
5
Needles Highway
After lunch we depart for the Needles Hwy. This 14 mile scenic drive is sure to leave you breathless and awe struck at amazing beauty of the Black Hills. Sit back and enjoy the ride and watch the crowd gather around when we drive the bus through the Needles Eye Tunnel. With only inches to spare on each side of the bus you can relish in the fact that you are not the one driving.
6
Sylvan Lake
Take a rest stop and coffee break at the beautiful Sylvan Lake. This is among the crown jewels of Custer State Park and the beauty within it.

Actually July 2013. Everything went off without a hitch, our driver Matt really made the trip, and actively takes part when you get off the bus to look at the sites. Bus journeys can be boring but Matt's commentary makes all the difference. There was plenty of time to tour Mt Rushmore, and The Crazy Horse Monument with stops along the way to marvel at the scenery. This event was the main reason for my travelling to Rapid City and I was NOT disappointed.

I went on the winter black hills tour (as that was the only option available). Our tour guy Steve, was remarkable! Very knowledgable and funny. My only issue with the tour package is I didn't feel the tour was worth the amount I paid which was $150 excl. Tax. The tour has two sights; Mount Rushmore and Crazy horse and you only spend 1 hour per sight. Personally, I feel the winter black hills tour price Should be between $75-100.

We found this on T/A and are glad we did. Ther are many who say why do a bus tour, do it yourself. The trip IMO would be a real white knuckle drive as it's very hilly, lots of curves many on the edge of the cliffs and I'm quite sure my focus would have been on the driving, not the scenary which was the purpose of the trip. This trip offers great value at $100pp which includes a pancake, sausage, buscuits and gravy breakfast (average) and a dinner (average) and live music (great fun). This part takes place at Ft. Hayes. When reviewing what to do when visiting the Black Hills, the main suggestions were Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse memorial, Sylvan Lake, Custer Park and Needles Hwy, well; this tour does it all. Our driver; Dan was awewsome providing an incredible commentary on the history of the area. How he managed to navigate the roads and especially the tunnels is beyond me. One of the tunnels only had a few inches of clearance on each side and he amused to people at the other end of the tunnel who were watching this spectacle with his "student driver" sign and then pretending to get the bus stuck.. hilarious. In addition to at least an hour stop at Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse (enough time to tour the site and the gift shops), he did numerous road stops for photo ops. The only issue was that we saw absolutely no wildlfe. Apparently they round up th bison towards the end of September for winter culling and we missed it. We were so desperate for something, at one of the road stops there was a nest of chipmunks and you wouldn't believe the excitement at even this sign of wildlife. Lunch isn't included and there is a stop, would recommend the buffet (about $14.00) and try the bison stew, definitely something different. It's a long day, starting at FT. Hayes at 7:30a.m. and returning to FT. Hayes around 5:30 p.m. If you do the dinner and show, it all ends around 8:00p.m. The shops here are interesting, tin plate maker, brick maker, gift shop including black hills jewelry, the only thing it's missing is a saloon. The sights on this tour are fantastic, but Dan the driver makes the tour even better. Thanks for the experience, I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting the area
