My eleven year old granddaughters were visitng and we went to Mt. Vernon for the day. It was my first visit with a child and it was a totally different experience. The visitors center and introductory film are still great but what I was more impressed with was the docents around the estate who patiently answered my granddaughters questions in simple terms. They were impressed with the mansion and the learning center films. It was a great day to be outdoors but if we had to spend more time indoors becase of the weather it was good to know that we could have spent a few hours in the learning center.

My children are traumatized by the violence shown in the video about George Washington’s life. This was a trip my eight year old daughter asked for last year and is now emotionally scarred at the violence depicted about Braddock’s fall during the French Indian War. There is a sign warning visitors “some battle scenes may be too intense for young viewers” but it is woefully misleading. The fight between the Native Americans is Saving Private Ryan levels of action. It is too much for any child under ten. I have no idea why this particular battle was depicted but now my youngest is petrified of Native Americans. I am shocked at the how violent this film was and how little was done to warn parents. One sign is not enough. Mount Vernon is gorgeous and the tour was wonderful but this film is not for children. Parents be warned.

We purchased our mansion tickets in advance of our trip to ensure we had ample time to visit and see inside of Washington’s home. The drawback was I was rushed to arrive on-time, but for most I assume that would not be an issue. Just know that the tour time means that time exactly or later but not one second before (seriously). We spent about 2.5 hours total. Pros: enjoyed seeing most rooms in the estate with the tickets. Great backdrop of the river in the backyard where you are able to walk around at your leisure. Exterior buildings, garden and Washington’s tomb were no cost to view. Docents were informative during mansions tour. Awesome museum tour covering Washington’s life. Cons: Pricey for mansion tour. I would have preferred just get in line and see the home rather than a specific time. No pictures inside of Washington’s home (so odd considering you can take photos in the White House and NY Met Museum). The front of the house was being renovated to an off white which was true to the color the house would have been during Washington’s period, so no great pictures in front of the house (big scaffolds).
