Very interesting history as George Washington's residence and estate. Seeing the actual house was great, as it was filled with memorabilia from Washington's time. There were lines to get inside, but they moved very quickly. Can be crowded as this is a top destination for school field trips. The views of the Potomac river were spectacular and there are many chairs on the porch for anyone wanting to take a break from walking around. The grounds are fairly expansive, would recommend allowing a few hours to see all the outlying buildings and gardens as well as the museum that goes into the history. The weather can be quite hot and humid here in Spring/Summer, so would recommend visitors take full advantage of shade and plan for water breaks if spending time walking the grounds.

Really enjoyed our tour of Mount Vernon. The gardens were beautiful. The audio tour was well worth it as much more detail was given for many of the places on the tour. I thought the reinactors did a nice job but wish there were a few more of them, especially if they could have presented more of the slave’s perspective. The home was in great shape and I could have sat on the front lawn watching the Potomac flow by all day. Make sure to save time for the museum while you are there as it is very nicely done.

Our first President’s home is a marvelous gem preserving our national history. The mansion tour is excellent and the grounds are delightful. The gift shops are a great place for souvenirs and gifts. The restaurant is very nice. Try the peanut soup. A trip to the nation’s capital is incomplete without admission to Mount Vernon.
