Muscle Shoals Sound Studio Tour in Sheffield Alabama

Overview
In 1969 the Swampers founded Muscle Shoals Sound Studio and within months they were attracting hit recording artists from around the world who came to them in search of the signature sound that forever changed American music. Through the generosity of Beats Electronics the legendary studio has been authentically restored. From the vintage equipment in the control room upstairs to the orange carpet in the Swampers' party room downstairs, the building looks exactly as it did during those magical years between 1969 and 1978. Peek into the bathroom where Keith Richards put the finishing touches on Wild Horses or sit at the piano that Paul Simon played on Kodachrome.

This 30 minute tour turned into 45 with fascinating stories from Terrill who has a long career in the music industry. He gives the history from day one and relays fascinating stories of those who recorded there. It’s not a generic recording studio tour, he gives you details!

I visited the studio knowing nothing about it and took a guided tour lead by a very knowledgeable guide named Terrel who knew ALL the history of the studio musicians, the recording artist, and the greater Florence connection to music. It was fascinating! It was well worth the small fee to see the studio and hear the stories.

Muscle Shoals Sound Studios (256-978-5151) – opens at 10am, tours start at 10:30 on the half hour. I went to the 11:30 am tour with Chase. Great vibe in this small studio where Mavis Staples, Cher, The Rolling Stones, Bob Segar, etc. all recorded. Chase said that Jerry Wexler had the Stones record 3 songs here after playing in Florida and Auburn before going to play at the infamous Altamonte, CA concert. Since The Stones did not have a work visa for recording in the US, these recordings were under the radar and the studio is not mentioned on the Sticky Fingers album. Wild Horses, Brown Sugar and a third song were recorded here. Thanks to Dre for donating money to help restore this piece of history.
