I love museums and this one is housed in a beautiful building with gorgeous architecture. Unfortunately, I couldn't find much to learn about here. I visited in order to understand the history of NYC, which is mostly confined to one gallery. The gallery is primarily black with limited lighting and the artifacts are in glass boxes. It's hard visually to read and see the items and descriptions because of the glare on the glass across almost all of the displays in quite a dark space. It's an old-fashioned approach to museum science when you're required to lean over and squint. I learned more about New York by visiting the NY Historical Society & Museum, who have a far better collection and a superior user experience. I did like the dollhouse here, that exhibit is well done. I'll visit MCNY again one day to try again, but I went to six museums during my week in New York and this one was the weakest by far. And yet it was similarly priced. They've got tons of physical space and not a lot in it. The possibilities are exciting. It would be nice if they visit the Museum of the American Revolution in Philly and re-evaluate their collection and overall strategy. NYC was such a key player in the revolutionary war, for example. There is not enough detailed New York history here. The could do a gallery on each era: Dutch settlement; revolutionary war period; 19th century; gilded age; and so on. And still have room left over for modern and changing exhibits. I'll be back to try again. Next time I'll try a guide or a tour.

If you like history, this place is for you. There is a ten minute movie on NYC’s evolution from Dutch trading post to now. The exhibits have objects found in excavations. Original portrait of Hamilton used for $10 bill is there. My favorite part was the analog history, during which I came of age. Typewriters, index cards, Lino type machine, etc.

Very interesting museum but could have included more on the Dutch settlement by including my ancestor’s chair!!! I was disappointed as I thought it was on permanent display but found it was in storage. It is part of the permanent collection, however, I couldn’t see it!
