New Orleans St. Louis #3 Cemetery Walking Tour: Angels, Architecture and Ghosts

Overview
Local award-winning author and historian Sally Asher will take you on a tour of a famous New Orleans cemetery that she wrote about her in book "Stories from the St. Louis Cemeteries of New Orleans." On this walking tour, you'll learn about burial practices, types of tombs, and visit the graves of some of the city's notable (and notorious) citizens including the hunchbacked photographer who secretly photographed prostitutes, the woman behind the quirky castle, the famed architect whose ship went down with over a 100 prostitutes and circus performers, and legendary chefs who collectively advanced the Civil Rights movement, restored horse racing in the city, and (for better or worse) introduced the turducken to the U.S. The tour takes an 1:15 and is under a mile. Sally is passionate about revealing New Orleans' unusual, outrageous, and untold stories, believing history isn’t about merely listing dates and facts, but the gentle collision of truth and narrative – scandals and all!

St. Louis Cemetery No. 3
Local author and historian Sally Asher will take you on a journey of a famous New Orleans cemetery. It’s been written that St. Louis Cemetery #3 has so many angels that one can “almost hear the beat of their wings.” You'll visit the graves and learn about some of the city's notable (and notorious) citizens including the first businesswoman to have a public statute erected in her honor, the hunchbacked photographer who secretly photographed prostitutes, the woman behind the quirky castle, the famed architect whose ship went down in a hurricane with over a hundred prostitutes and circus performers, and some legendary chefs who collectively advanced the Civil Rights movement, restored horse racing in New Orleans, and (for better or worse) introduced the turducken to the U.S.. This tour takes approximately an hour and a half and covers roughly a half mile. The tour meets in front of the cemetery on 3421 Esplanade Ave at the gate farthest to the right underneath the trees.

Sally is passionate about cemeteries! And she shared her deep knowledge of burial practices and symbolism of the graves and tombs in St. Louis 3 respectfully and in the context of the larger history of New Orleans. Very kind and patient with questions. Recommend her without reservation.

Sally was an extremely knowledgeable guide. She clearly has a passion for the cemeteries of New Orleans. We learned a lot about the burial Traditions of New Orleans and the symbolism used on the tombs as well as stories about individual tombs and the people buried in them. Everything was thoroughly researched and explained in an easy to understand and engaging manner. My husband and I enjoyed this tour so much that we joined her later in the day for a tour of Metairie Cemetery and enjoyed that just as much. Would definitely recommend any tour or lecture she is giving
