We had such high hopes that the hop on/hop off Big Bus tour of NYC would be an easy way to see the city and would provide some humor and history as well for the family. Just didn't work out that way. Will break this down in a few sections for ease of reading 1. First Impression @ Checkin--BAD We downloaded the big bus app and used that to purchase our 2 day passes. The app says that you just have to show your phone to the host/driver to board. True...until you reach the Times Square stop at which time they kick you off the bus to walk to the office where they look at your phone and then give you a bunch of paper tickets. The staff was unfriendly. The experience to have to do all this was ridiculous. I can't believe I used an app and then had to get paper tickets. Further, you get this entire lecture about no losing your paper tickets because then you have to pay to replace them which...duh...is why I wanted to use my phone to get on and off the bus with the family. Terrible customer service. Terrible approach. Terrible first impression. 2) The loops offered--GREAT The loops that the company offers are logical and convenient for seeing the city. We did the downtown and uptown loops during our visit. 3) the bus guides--AWFUL We experienced several drivers while there. None were terribly enthusiastic or offered much of anything in the way of knowledge or history about the city or the sights. This is a no kidding quote from one of the drivers: "The building you are seeing is Empire State. you may recall it from the movie King Kong when he hangs off of it with a girl in his arms." And then that was it. Really?! That's the takeaway from one of the finest and most iconic pieces of architecture in the United States? A poor movie reference from 30+ years ago that my kids don't even understand? 4) Convenience--AVERAGE While many of the stops are centrally located, there were many stops at which the buses were so full people couldn't get on. We heard several people complain of having waited for 2-3 buses to pass to actually be able to get on a bus. So be aware--your hop on, hop off experience will make you salty if you are standing around for an hour waiting for a bus. Granted it was during the holidays, but it you'd think the company would plan for these peak periods and have extra buses out during this time. All in all, we would not do this again.

Prepaid for 2 day hop on-hop off bus ticket( and got 1 day free ) We went uptown to Central Park and Harlem seen all upper west side and upper east side. Downtown tour took in Chinatown, little Italy , lower Manhattan and New York shore as well as views of the Brooklyn bridge, Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty to name but a few. We done the night tour which showed everything all lit up( spectacular) we done the free horn lower tour to get a close up of Liberty island and Ellis island (free with your big bus ticket) and we done the Brooklyn tour(thank you to Elizabeth who made our tour very memorable) from Mrs Scotland at the front of the bus with her daughter lol And for the tour guide that was on bus #113 Sunday night who looked high and low for my phone THANK YOU SO MUCH , I found it up the sleeve of my coat when I got back to the hotel All the tour guides wer very knowledgable about the area that the bus was travelling and always willing to help

We only had 4 days in NYC this trip. And we wanted to see as many things as we possibly could. The Big Bus Tour ended up being the perfect solution for us. At first we were unsure about taking this tour because many of the sales people are a little pushy and they seem to be all over the place....but after taking a few minutes to talk with one of the representatives outside of our hotel, we changed our minds....he actually took the time to show us the reviews on trip advisor...which we use anytime we travel and want accurate descriptions and reviews of activities and restaurants....and there was no comparison between Big Bus Tours and the closest rated similar tours. We chose the 2 day, 2 route tickets. Since this is a "hop on/ hop off" tour, we could choose where we wanted to go ...we were provided with a really good route map that was actually a pretty good map of the Manhattan area of NYC. It showed all of the stops on the routes. We decided to do the Uptown route one day and the Downtown route the next. We were also provided with earbuds, which we were allowed to keep, so we could hear very clearly the narration by the guide whether we were sitting in the open air upper level of the bus or on the air-conditioned lower level. The tour guides we had (4 different people at different times) were not only informational, but quite entertaining as well. One of the days we went it looked as if it might rain and Big Bus Tours provided rain ponchos for everyone that we also were allowed to keep. We got to see everything from The Empire State Building to Central Park to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the 9/11 Memorial and the One World Trade Center Building. We would highly recommend these tours to anyone who wants to see as much of NYC as possible in a convenient and reasonably priced way. We would not hesitate to take this tour again the next time we are in NYC!
