Our original trip was scheduled earlier in the summer, but an unexpected siege of kidney stones caused us to cancel. The staff at Outer Island was more than gracious in allowing us to reschedule. The day we went it was 90 degrees on land, but cool and comfortable on the water when we headed out in search of orcas at 5pm on July 19. Our vessel was small and fast, and Captain Matt found a pod of whales for us pretty quickly. In fact, eventually we were joined by 2 other pods!! 5pm is a nice time to visit in the summer; it doesn't get dark early, and you're not competing with lots of other boats. We saw orcas everywhere...in front, behind and even beside the boat! It was one of the highlights of my life. The captain also sought out a minkie whale, porpoise and even a little puffin in the water. Both the captain and crew (I apologize for forgetting her name) were extremely knowledgeable and shared interesting facts about whales in their habitat, they could even point out the individual orcas by name. We highly recommend Outer Island Expeditions if whale-watching is on your bucket list!

You can't really beat the views of Mt. Baker on the Doughty Point, 3-hour trip. The snowy peak in view as you sea kayak was a treat. The experience is overall very simple, relaxed and beginner friendly. We were given a quick briefing and were out on the water in no time. You are in double/tandem kayaks and the water on our day was very calm. We made our way to Doughty Point and our guide, Benson, pointed out some interesting things along the way. We didn't see much wildlife on our trip so don't expect to see Orcas! This was fine for us, but if you are on the island to see whales, a whale watching experience is likely best. We were able to spot a bald eagle, harbor seals, and porpoises. Thanks to Outer Island and Benson for a fun afternoon.

Chartered a whale watching tour with Capt Sky, and we had a blast. Saw everything: Orcas jumping, bald eagles, seals, salmon, even mufflons on John Wayne's private island. Sky was great, we originally wanted to stay out 3h, but on a whim, decided to stay longer and enjoy the sunset on the water. Sky got us to the perfect spot.
