What To Expect
1
Baerlic Brewing Company
This is a sample itinerary, all schedules are subject to change. Longtime partners in crime, Baerlic Brewing owners Ben and Rik attended high school together, and have been homebrewing together for the better part of a decade. The boys recently made the leap to owning and running a professional brewery, and that leap of faith has more than paid off, as Ben and Rick are now known for making some of the best and most innovative beers in town. Ben is one of the best graphic artists in town and created all of Baerlic’s swag. Rik also happens to be one of the best bike mechanics in town, and utilizes his mechanical skills in the brewhouse, including an event which allowed taproom guests were able to hop on a bike and mill grain just by pedaling!
2
Upright Brewery
Upright Brewing specializes in farmhouse inspired beers rooted in France and Belgium, but made with a Pacific Northwest twist, dabbling in both classic and quirky projects from around the world. The name references the primary instrument of Charles Mingus, a musician whose compositions, like Upright’s brews, defy categorization. At Upright, the recipes and processes are decidedly unbound, making for true hybrid styles that share Mingus’ spirit of exercising creativity and craft.

My wife and I took this tour during a recent visit to Portland. The group was small (only 7 total), which allowed our guide to give excellent attention to guests. The breweries chosen were all great. I particularly liked Unicorn Brewing which was in a homebrew store, and I never would have found it on my own. I have been home brewing for 13 years so I tuned out the beer brewing 101 commentary from the guide and focused on enjoying the beers themselves. The Brewers we visited were very gracious and hospitable. A must do when visiting Portland.

My Girlfriend and I had an excellent time on our tour with Benjamin. The tour that he and the company provided met or exceeded our expectations. I work as a tour guide elsewhere, so to Ben I say I could not have done a better job myself.

For this tour the pick up location is MT Hood Brewing. Getting there was so easy on the MAX train which stops right across the street from the brewery and runs frequently. Although MT Hood wasn’t one of the official stops for the tour I recommend heading there early, grabbing a beer and one of their brick oven pizzas. All were delicious and the renovated train cars are really cool as well. If you have time, right across the street is the Oregon Rail Heritage Center which looks really interesting with a ton of train cars on property. Our tour took us to three breweries, Laurelwood, Sasquatch and Ex Novo. All were really good and during our stop in Laurelwood we got to take a tour of their operation. At Ex Novo we shared some great appetizers with the tour group. We only had 6 people on our tour so it gave us all a chance to talk and share stories. Our tour guide, Thom, was really great and very knowledgeable about the history and development of the beer scene in Portland. We will definitely try another Brewvana tour during our next visit to Portland!
