Pele's Creation Day Tour from Hilo - Puna 2018 Lava Flow (Hawaii)

Overview
The 2018 eruption wreaked havoc upon the subdivision of Leilani Estates. While there is currently no active surface lava on the island, the destruction is still evident here. You will hear first-hand accounts from real homeowners and see Fissure 8, the largest fissure from the eruption. We have exclusive access to visit 4 different properties destroyed in the eruption. A portion of our sales goes to those who tragically lost their homes.

Overall my family and I had a great experience with our tour guide, Maui. He was accommodating, willing to work with us on our timing and when we needed a break out of the car. Highlight of our tour was with Heath, a resident of Leilani Estates. We were saw the affects of the 2018 volcano eruption. Heath walked us through his property where he has left most of his home and articles the way it was after the devastation. It was amazing to see and could only imagine the how the lost was/is for him and his family. Heath was in process of updating and adding space to the home he purchased and lost everything but his family and the clothes they were wearing. We saw tiles stacked, brand new lawn mower and table saws, etc., burned to the ground. The reason for the 4/5 rating is for the long tour and all that was provided was bananas and water. I think an improvement to this tour would be to offer a picnic lunch, sandwich, chips, fruit and drinks with a place with a nice view to eat a lunch. Maui offered to give is time to stop for lunch but I packed a lunch. We ended up eating in the vehicle due rain. 6 hours is good for this trip. There is as lot to see and take in during this tour. I recommend to be flexible with the itinerary of the tour due to the weather on the east side of the Big Island.

Skyler and the team provided a first hand view of the destruction of the most recent lava flow from 2018. The two properties owners from Leilani Estates provided a first hand view of the efforts made to try and save their homes. The trip out to view the newly created beach, the farmers market, the painted church and the new ground for the Hawaiian culture centre completed a most unique excursion. I would highly recommend this trip over any other to see what the power of lava creates!!

I took this tour two weeks ago when my cruise was docked in Hilo. The guide picked us up right at the ship, was very professional and friendly, and taught us all sorts of Hawaiian history on the way to Leilani Estates. Once we arrived there, we were met by some of the homeowners who had lost their homes to the lava flow of 2018. They were incredibly welcoming, had tons of great information to share with us, along with pictures and personal stories. We were able to walk over the cooled lava on different properties and got to see how the fissures tore some of the lots apart. This tour truly opened our eyes to how destructive the lava flow actually was. I recommend this tour to anyone considering it, you won't regret it.
