Premier Juneau Whale Watching Expedition

Overview
Your 3 hour whale watching adventure begins when you board a coach bus that departs downtown Juneau from the Mt. Roberts Tram parking lot. A 25 minute journey through the picturesque landscape of Southeast Alaska will take you to Auke Bay Harbor. “All aboard!” and you’re off for Alaska waters and the ultimate whale watching experience. The star of the tour is the humpback whale, but we are always looking out for sea lions, bald eagles, or the playful orca. The whales are here to feed in our abundant Alaskan waters.  Our naturalist guides you on a 2 hour whale watching tour. With our experienced captains and Juneau being one of the best ports for whale watching in Alaska, this tour will be an unforgettable experience. A light snack and refreshments will be provided.

We had a great tour, beginning with our driver Michael who first took us to Auke Bay for the whale watching. We were both very lucky and very unlucky. Lucky because we saw MANY whales, some breaching. Unlucky because it was rainy and windy (to be honest - nasty!). Still --- worth it. The marine person on the boat (Charley?) was fantastic. Then over to the Mendenhall Glacier which is a must see in Juneau. We didn't have the time to walk ALL the way to the glacier or waterfall, but still got very good views, albeit in the rain. Hated the weather. (Gotta be tough.) Loved the combo tour. Also --- I will note that we booked this independently from our cruise ship. Apparently, those who booked directly with the ship found out at the last minute that the whale watching was CANCELLED. Wimps! I am SO glad we went independently!

We booked the Mendenhall Glacier and Whale Watching tour upon arrival at the Juneau Port (dock side) for half the cost of the on-board price of the cruise line and we got a much better tour. Our tour tour started with transportation to the Mendenhall Glacier and 2 hours for hiking, sightseeing and touring the glacier and visitors center which was the perfect amount of time. We were then transported from the Mendenhall glacier to the whale watching boats. The boats appeared to be brand new, were fast, comfortable, super clean and had an amazing crew; Captain Brenden, Tori and Dave. All three were locals who had such enthusiasm and love for the whales and orcas and other sea life it made for an informative and fabulous afternoon. They guaranteed that we would see whales and they did not disappoint. We first spotted two Orcas just hanging out in the waters and the Orcas came fairly close to the boats. Captain Brenden then took us down to the area where humpbacks were seen earlier in the day and sure enough there they were about 10 adults and a couple of calfs a couple of hundred yards out. Captain Brenden turned the boat off, stopped and with-in minutes the whales actually approached us and came with in feet of the boat and just stayed there surfacing and diving and feeding for about 45 minutes. Captain Brenden, Tori and Dave all made such a positive impact on all of the passengers with their knowledge and experience making the day truly memorable
