My must-see bucket list for Juneau shore excursion was whale watching and Medenhall Glacier and this small-group tour fit the bill. We went Whale Watching first aboard a small boat that held 15 maximum which allowed everyone cat-bird views from anywhere around the boat without being crowded. Our all-female crew, captain and naturalist guide did a great job with whale sightings and information about the area. Our naturalist knew the names of the whales we saw by their distinct tail markings. Binoculars here is a bonus. Restrooms were available with water and a snack of granola bars provided. On returned, we boarded the bus that transported us to Mendenhall Glacier.
This part of the tour was self-paced, self-guided and was let off at the tour drop-off entrance to the Glacier park and shown where to catch the shuttle for the return trip to the cruise port. Pay attention to this information as it appears different tour groups have different pick-up locations around the small parking area. There are several different walks you can take. Our driver pointed out the Creek Walk is entirely boardwalk and would be the most likely area to spot to catch sightings of brown bear fishing but didn't have enough time to do.
The walk to the photo point was the shortest of the two walks I did do was about 15 min on easy, graved path and provides a good view of the glacier. The second walk to Nugget Falls was longer, about 2 mi. round trip was on an easy but gravely path that took you around the lake and up close to the falls and glacier ending at a sandy beach. This part of the path you want to have bug repellent on for the mosquitoes. The Visitor Center will also give you a good view of the glacier and is accessible by elevator and stairs.
