Private Buckskin Gulch Tour

Overview

There are as many metaphors to describe what locals call 'down in the Buckskin' as there are people who have been there. I choose the word 'in' because you are literally inside the walls of the world's longest slot canyon.

According to the Bureau of Land Management ('BLM') website, Buckskin Gulch is 16 miles long (around 26 km) from the Buckskin Trailhead to the Paria Canyon and over 500 feet (around 150m) deep at its confluence with the Paria River. There are places in the Buckskin where you are able to touch both canyon walls at the same time.

Buckskin Gulch is a photographer's and hiker's Mecca. Every corner you turn is changing continuously; the cliffs are water-and-wind-sculpted patterns of colors, light and shadows. You may also marvel and puzzle at the meanings of the rock writings (petroglyphs) from the early Archaic period (some are as old as 9,000 years).

It was voted one the top 10 hikes in the world by National Geographic Adventure Magazine a few years back.

I booked 2 days with Yermo. The first day we went to Buckskin Gulch middle route. It was a very nice hike but when we got to the canyon I refused to go down the last 200 feet. Yermo promised he'd get me up and down but I said no. So we then went to the Wire Pass trail head and hiked into Buckskin from there. Thank you Yermo; it was great. The second day was supposed to be Coyote Buttes South but my wife went to the in person Wave lottery for me and got a permit. So naturally I went to the Wave the second day. What a hike and what a place. On the way back we stopped at some very interesting dinosaur tracks. If you are lucky and get a Wave permit, hire a guide who can show you all there is too see. Yermo does not combine groups so you and your friends make any decisions (like switching from Coyote Buttes South to the Wave) and in this day of COVID you don’t need to worry about any possibly sick folks joining your group. Yermo is very cautious regarding COVID. He wears a mask in the truck (you will too), uses hand sanitizer a lot, and after climbing the ladder in the canyon offered it to me as well. Yermo was great and I highly recommend him.

My husband and I had a blast on this tour with Jeff! We hiked to Buckskin Gulch absorbing the magnificent scenery. The slot canyons are breath taking and such fun to explore. Jeff even pointed out some early rock carvings drawn by primitive people. We highly recommend this tour for any adventurous person who wants a once in a lifetime experience!

Absolutely beautiful! Like nothing I have seen before. Our guide Jeff Frost was fun and adventurous. He was very knowledgeable about the area and had lots of stories to tell about growing up in the area. We were able to hike miles and not see another soul. That was a real treat. And you pronounce the nearby town Kanaaab not kanob!
