Privateer Schooner Sailing Tour in Salem Sound

Overview
FAME is annually the #1-rated boat in Salem and one of the top-rated activities in the entire town, per TripAdvisor. Don't miss the very best of what Salem has to offer! There's more to our town than witches!

FAME is a full-scale replica of a privateer schooner from the War of 1812 that captured over 20 prizes! We sail up to five times a day between May and October from Pickering Wharf Marina in downtown Salem.

On board our traditional gaff-rigged schooner, you'll get a chance to raise the sails and even steer the boat as we sail Salem Sound and talk about the fisherman, traders, and privateers that played such a central role in the saga of Salem, of Massachusetts, and of the young United States.

This is a great hands-on adventure for all ages — but you can also just sit back and enjoy a beverage and take it all in as we cruise past the historic forts and lighthouses of Salem, Beverly, and Marblehead.

I've been on 2 previous trips on the Schooner Fame, and I wanted something longer than the 2-hour trip in Salem Harbor. I got a ticket for a trip on the Fame from Salem into Boston Harbor to see the Tall Ships. We motored down (to be sure we got to see the ships), but had a great wind on the return trip, making over 9 knots! Captain Mike is a great host; the crew is friendly, and kids (and adults) are invited to help raise the sails - and even take the tiller when we were out in open water. The captain's wife even sent along some yummy ginger cookies for the trip.

I booked a cruise on the Fame for me and my daughters from Salem down to Boston Harbor to view the tall ships that were in port for Sail Boston. We arrived at Pickering Wharf, picked out on spot on deck to sit and got under way smoothly. On our cruise down to Boston, captain Mike and able his crew -- Jake and John -- were friendly and did a wonderful job regaling us about the area's and the (original) Fame's rich maritime history. Captain Mike's wife also treated us to some wonderful ginger cookies. Upon arrival in Boston Harbor, Captain Mike told us about the various ships in port as we encountered them, and did a great job navigating around the various piers and slips to see the tall ships. In the afternoon, those who were interested helped raise the sails. We enjoyed a beautiful sail back up to Salem, with opportunities to helm the Fame at the tiller for those so inclined. My daughters and I enjoyed a wonderful time on this cruise and highly recommend it to anyone interested in sailing, spending time on the water and/or learning more about New England's maritime heritage.

I went on a trip to Salem this past weekend, it was 90+ degrees out and a trip on a boat seemed like a great idea. It was amazing. The guys running the ship clearly love what they do and they sail very well. The wind was strong and we got a great tour of the Salem Harbour, replete with stories of privateers, piarates and the history of the boat, which is a great reproduction. We also sat back, had a few very well priced beers and just enjoyed the day. I would do this again next week but this beautiful ship is going to be a part of the Tall Ships extravaganza in Boston.
