Spent a full day at San Diego zoo with my 10 year old daughter in early August and we had an amazing time. The absolute highlight of our time in San Diego. We’ve been to a few zoos in other cities in the US and elsewhere and this one blows the others away. It’s just a gorgeous place. Even the Bronx zoo which I rate highly. Not in the same league. This zoo while a bit pricey is value for money in my opinion. It is huge beautiful space in the heart of Balboa Park, it is very well laid out and relatively easy to navigate ( a bit hilly in some areas) and there are staff and volunteers available all over the place to get info/directions. A wide selection of food options. We ended up eating at a BBQ place (forgotten the name) and it was expensive and the food was just okay. But we didn’t go for the food. We went to see the beautiful wildlife and that we saw…the animals are mostly kept in large enclosures so not cooped up. They look very well taken care of and there is such a wide range and species of animals and birds to see. Although we walked quite a bit it was nice to have the cable cars to get from one end of the zoo to the other and we also took the bus tour all of which is included in the admission price. We also did the Animals in Action tour which did afford a close up interaction with a few of the animals (zebra, sloth, hippo, flamingoes, cheetah) and it was nice but I don’t think worth the 99.00 per ticket. This is a must do when visiting San Diego and we will definitely be back.
