We had a large group of 11 relatives with us, most from Northern Iowa & Minneapolis & they were very excited to be out on the ocean while it was snowing back at home.We all had to sign waivers at the "office" on the dock prior to boarding, which was easy & well organized, then we were shown to the boat. The Captains greeted us on board & gave the necessary safety briefing before we left the marina. There was a small bathroom onboard with a door which was very difficult to lock so I just held it closed & a bar/refreshments area, as well as many seats, both inside in the shade & outside in the sun.It was a beautifully sunny day, so we all sat outside at the bow.We were given information about the usual migration routes of the whales which we could see if we were very lucky but that hopefully we would see Dolphins, which is what we had expected. We saw many Sea Lions, Pelicans & Cormorants on the way out of the marina. We cruised 6.5 miles out into the ocean, while Captain Chris used binoculars to look for Dolphins or whale spouts. If you think there is even a small chance that you could get seasick, take some Dramamine 30 minutes before boarding.I thought the waves were very calm, but 1 member of our party who hadn't taken Dramamine got seasick & at least 1 other of our fellow passengers also got seasick. When we got about 6 miles out, Captain Chris spotted a spout, so we sped towards were he saw it. It was a beautiful Humpback whale, which was swimming in very large circles while diving to eat sardines. Marine Mammal Protection laws limit how close we could get to the whale, but we were able to see it very well. It dove 7 times while we watched & we waited approx. 3 mins. for it to resurface each time.We had many opportunities to get some really good photos & videos. We had to go back to the Marina because it's only a 2 hour tour, so turned around & went back, while looking for dolphins.Surprisingly, we didn't see any dolphins, but having seen the whale made up for that! All in all, it was a beautiful day on the water, it would have been great even if we didn't see the whale, but because of that, it was phenomenal!
