What To Expect
1
Lower Manhattan
The meeting point for the group is always at a park where there is seating, shade, and water. While the group awaits for all the attendees to arrive, the tour guide will provide some general colonial history of New York City and deliver interesting facts related to the era — like why we say 'bucks' instead of dollars, why 'Houston' is pronounced differently in NYC, and much more. Once the whole group is ready, the tour guide will provide a small introduction about the speakeasy tour and explain how long it is, how many speakeasies will be visited (it's usually six or seven), and at which speakeasy the group will be allowed to grab a drink. The tour guide will also explain where the tour ends, which is always an area with nightlife, bars, clubs, and restaurants — all located in close proximity to subway entrances. On every tour, the first drink is enjoyed at the first speakeasy. In most cases, the group will either skip the line, get a reserved table, or both — but skipping the line is guaranteed. While enjoying a high-quality, internationally recognized, award-winning cocktail, the tour guide will explain about the causes and effects that led to passing the 18th amendment (Prohibition). The guide will not only explain how and why it was passed, but the history of alcohol consumption in the US in general, the history of alcohol taxation, and most importantly, how the US tried to enforce Prohibition. For each drink, spend up to an hour, but in most cases, the group only takes around 40 minutes. Tour guides are obliged to assure that no one feels too rushed to finish their drinks because they are high-quality crafted cocktails that ought to be savored and enjoyed. Some speakeasies will have even Burlesque shows, but all are completely hidden from the exterior. Go through unmarked doors, back alley ways, phone booths, a bank's vault door, behind a psychic shop, through doors indicating 'No Entrance,' 'Emergency exit only' or even through a Five Guys burger joint. Most of the speakeasies are so well hidden that most of our clientele are actually locals struggling to find them, even with the physical address on their phones. At the last stop, the guide will give the option to either stay at the last speakeasy for a third drink or to explore the stimulated and vivid neighborhood where the tour ends, where there is many nightlife establishments, restaurants, clubs, bars, stand up comedy, life music and much more.

Our tour guide was Charles. It was his first tour on his own. We thought he did a great job! He kept our attention and he was quite the historian. He mingled with the group as well. We made a visit to 5 speakeasy bars. Lots of walking on the SoHoNoHo tour, wear comfortable shoes. Try to eat before of after the tour. One place you could order a small snack. During the tour you will pass several good places to eat after the tour is over. It was nice to meet different people on the tour. It was freezing but we still had great time. Would recommend to locals and visitors.

i would have like to have gone in the opposite order, the Back Room was great, but by the time we got there it was too crowded to really enjoy. This is a REALLY SMALL recommendation because the tour was great and showed the hidden side of NYC and it made me want to do a treasure hunt of other speakeasies through the city and even look around my home town of Philadelphia. Alex our tour guide had some fun historical facts, was open to our questions and made good suggestions on where you could find more information on the history of the cocktail and the probation era that created the speakeasy.
The first two stops of our SOHONOHO tour were to very none descript bars, that if you did not know about them, you would have just walked past them, the third was the most fun only because of the direction to get there walk through the restaurant, through the kitchen and at the back of the kitchen walk the through the door that says do not enter, employees only. Finally we came to the Back Room, the true 20s speakeasy right down to the drinks served in tea cups.
If you go, follow the direction given by the tour, wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to walk, the walking is not bad since you have stops along the way and Alex kept the pace going based on the group members. Like all drinking nights out, interact with the other tour members it will make the night that more fun.
Next to the broadway show while visiting NYC, the tour was the highlight of our trip and worth the early evening time, leaving time for a late dinner and few after dinner drinks. Enjoy!

My friends and I got a Groupon for the speakeasy tour and chose the Lower East Side location. We come to the city often, but it was a nice change of pace and we got to learn a bit about the prohibition while also discovering fun, hidden bars. We went this past weekend and since it was snowing the subways were delayed and we were worried about not making it to the meeting spot on time. We called the number provided and the person we spoke with was very nice and friendly...we were given the location of the first speakeasy and met up with the group there. We were only about 10 minutes late and it wasn't a big deal. Our tour guide Tony was extremely knowledgeable and offered good drink recommendations. The 3 speakeasies we went to were all awesome, plus we were shown a few other speakeasies that we will have to go to in the future. I've already recommended this tour company to others and I would definitely consider going on a tour in a different location in the city. Each drink I got was about $15 which kind of sucked, but it's NYC and they were well made cocktails! Plus the tour was $20 from Groupon so it was totally worth it.
