Skunk Train: Pudding Creek Express from Fort Bragg

Overview
This relaxed and scenic 7-mile roundtrip journey departs the Depot in downtown Fort Bragg year-round, traveling along the beautiful Pudding Creek Estuary and passing into primeval ancient redwoods to the tranquil setting of Glen Blair Junction.

Trains will stop at Glen Blair Junction for 15 minutes, allowing you to get off and stretch your legs and explore. Or, if you’d like to spend more time walking our trails amongst the redwoods, you can remain and catch the next train (roughly two hours later). Plenty of time to explore. Feel free to bring a packed lunch (no alcohol, please) to enjoy at one of our picnic tables.

These were some of the first tracks ever laid down by the California Western Railroad in 1885, and we've been carrying passengers on them ever since.

Back in the last century I attended the Boy's Club summer camp in the area and the "original" Skunk Train used to pass right by the camp on a daily basis. This one looked like an old fashioned bus on rails. Fast forward to May, 2024 and my wife and I took the current Skunk Train (diesel locomotive pulling some old fashioned passenger cars) on a short ride through the redwood forest to a stop off where we took a 30 minute hike through the forest (path set up by the Skunk Train people) and then returned to Fort Bragg. Great scenery, nice opportunity to stretch our legs midway. Right across the tracks from the Fort Bragg station is an amazing indoor/outdoor model railroad exhibit. The scenery is a reproduction of the railroad line in the days of the redwood logging operation that was a major industry in the early parts of the 20th Century. All in all, both my wife and I really enjoyed the outing and it's a fun trip for both adults and children.

There wasn't as much to see as I had hoped. The ride was OK but too short. If they someday get the tunnel repaired then it might be worth it.

Lovely ride into the countryside with lots of scenery to admire Staff was friendly and informative about the history of the train.
