Skunk Train: Pudding Creek Express from Fort Bragg

Overview
This relaxed and scenic 7-mile roundtrip journey departs the Depot in downtown Fort Bragg year-round, traveling along the beautiful Pudding Creek Estuary and passing into primeval ancient redwoods to the tranquil setting of Glen Blair Junction.

Trains will stop at Glen Blair Junction for 15 minutes, allowing you to get off and stretch your legs and explore. Or, if you’d like to spend more time walking our trails amongst the redwoods, you can remain and catch the next train (roughly two hours later). Plenty of time to explore. Feel free to bring a packed lunch (no alcohol, please) to enjoy at one of our picnic tables.

These were some of the first tracks ever laid down by the California Western Railroad in 1885, and we've been carrying passengers on them ever since.

After a lifetime of reading promotion for the Skunk, we found this a totally unremarkable attraction. The staff were friendly. The scenery is pretty enough -- not stunning, not breathtaking, not unique -- unless you have never seen any other part of the CA coastal redwoods and have never been on a train. The Pudding Creek run is arguably worth $20 a person -- not $50 or the higher VIP option. The outhouse-quality restroom inside the dilapidated "historic" rail car is completely unacceptable, and the ones in the station house are just marginally better. This excursion need not be on ANYONE's bucket list. It's appropriate for grandparents shepherding 4-to-8-year-olds. For anyone else, it's an underwhelming up-and-back slow train ride.

Rail Bike. Its only a 5.5 mile round trip trek. For 2 not so young, older women, it was perfect. It wasn't as far as I'd hoped. It is very pricey too. $250 a bike for 2. The Skunk Train uses same rail. They had a tunnel collapse almost 8 years ago and are still trying to get it up and working again. I would wait till its finished. Maybe 2 years? The guide was great. There is a Walking path all along same route. So if your physically fit, walk it and save yourselves some $.

My road trip this summer was all about rail bikes and having driven 700 miles to do the Railbikes on the Noyo, at the last minute I just couldn't part with $600 Cdn (they charge singles for both seats, but don't give you the second sandwich). The ticket seller couldn't say what was so marvellous about the ride to justify the preposterous price, and although they forbid dogs, couldn't be bothered to refer me to a doggy daycare. The ticket seller seemed to think I should have made a reservation online in advance despite no mobile data on 99% of the west coast, a tentative travel schedule, and the danger of having your credit card compromised over WiFi. I ended up doing the Pudding Creek outing with my dog, but what a waste of my time.
