Skunk Train: Pudding Creek Express from Fort Bragg

Overview
This relaxed and scenic 7-mile roundtrip journey departs the Depot in downtown Fort Bragg year-round, traveling along the beautiful Pudding Creek Estuary and passing into primeval ancient redwoods to the tranquil setting of Glen Blair Junction.

Trains will stop at Glen Blair Junction for 15 minutes, allowing you to get off and stretch your legs and explore. Or, if you’d like to spend more time walking our trails amongst the redwoods, you can remain and catch the next train (roughly two hours later). Plenty of time to explore. Feel free to bring a packed lunch (no alcohol, please) to enjoy at one of our picnic tables.

These were some of the first tracks ever laid down by the California Western Railroad in 1885, and we've been carrying passengers on them ever since.

Pudding Creek Express event on the Skunk Train, Fort Bragg, CA As an almost-retiree this is not an experience I’d recommend to others of similar ilk. It’s pleasant to ride in a vintage train and open observation platform but the views and exposure to redwoods is limited while dogs, babies and popcorn sales are abundant. We went on a weekday during the school year and were greatly surprised at the number of families with young children on the train. Short ride, limited views, lots of running up and down the aisles, not recommending this experience.

This was a fun, if short excursion into the woods east of Fort Bragg. For the best experience you should ride in the open air car. The train stops at a redwood grove with a deck and chairs where one can get out and just enjoy the trees or walk the trails before returning to town. Scenery was lovely. Some may think think it is overpriced for what you get, but considering that this is strictly a tourist attraction with no other source of revenue (i.e. mail or freight) the cost is understandable.

The ride was nice. I enjoyed the historical commentary - that was very interesting. My 3 and 5 year old liked it, especially the open car and getting off at the stop and playing at the building there. Loved the forest smells and the kids liked the snack car. Overall it was a good experience. The problem was paying $160 for a family of 4, for what amounts to a very short ride - seemed quite expensive. Tack on $12 popcorn.. etc.
