We opted to get picked up at St. Roch's market, where we ate breakfast before our tour guide/driver arrived -- he came in the market to get us. I packed a drawstring back pack with water, sunscreen, bug spray, my ID, and I put my cell phone in a ziplock bag. You can leave items in the van (which is just parked along the side of road, and they had one extra cell phone bag for anyone who didn't bring something to store their phones in. I also wore a hat to shade myself. The heat index was over 100 degrees on this late June tour, and while I had a bottle of water for myself, I drank it all by the time we got to the turnaround point. Luckily on the way back to the market there's a spot to get water, but I'd recommend if you're going in hot temperatures, pack extra water! I also reapplied sunscreen to my arms and face once, but forgot to re-coat the tops of my thighs, which got a little burnt. There weren't any mosquitoes, but there were plenty of dragonflies and little frogs, and a few small spiders. One large spider landed in our boat, but thankfully my partner got it out before I saw it. We also saw an alligator and a few fish, and all kinds of birds. The most interesting part was listening to our tour guide, who knew a lot about the area, and the plants and animals. We had no issues kayaking, although the water was pretty low in some areas, so we had to power through some muddy/root/branch areas. It's a great way to see Louisiana outside of the city!
