Small-Group Surf Lesson on the Big Island

Overview
You never forget your first wave, as surfing enthusiasts in Hawaii are prone to say, so make sure your first wave is a good one with a small-group surf lesson on the Big Island. This 2-hour Kona surf lesson starts with the basics, like surfing safety, etiquette and how to paddle and pop up on the board. Then take to the water to practice your newfound skills on the waves of Kahalu'u Bay! A knowledgeable surfing instructor will be in the water with you, telling you when to paddle and when to pop up. It’s a Hawaiian experience everyone should try at least once!

My sons, 19 and 21 y.o., took a 2+ hr group surf lesson. They've surfed before, and they rated this outfit as the best one they've gone out with. The good stuff -- Location -- The waves in the bay right across the street from the surf shop were just perfect for both beginner and intermediate surfers. My boys had quite a few great rides. Instruction -- Hat tip to Kobe, of whom they spoke very highly. Easygoing, extraordinarily helpful, gave them the instruction/tips that they needed, but gave them enough slack to let them learn from experience, also. Organization -- Ben, who runs the shop, was great. Excellent communication, efficient in terms of time, a really good guy. Also, he clearly has safety as his top ten priorities. Value -- Very reasonably priced, unlike almost everything else on Hawaii. The bad stuff -- Well, there really wasn't any bad stuff. Would recommend these guys without reservations.

My 9 year old daughter has been wanting to try surfing the last few times we have been in Kona. Neither of us has ever surfed before. We signed up for a semi-private lesson and ended up with a single instructor for both of us. Chris was fantastic and was an incredible teacher. He is especially good with young kids! The shop is right across the street form where you jump in and start paddling out to the waves. Parking is a little tough next to the shop so we parked in the beach parking lot just down the street. We spent about 15 minutes on shore practicing standing up from paddle position on the board. Then it was 90 minutes in the surf. If you have never surfed before you are in for a workout and I'm not sure I could have stayed out much longer than the lesson time. We took turns on some mellow surf waves, though they were definitely big enough to get the adrenaline going. The water was about 10-15 feet deep at high tide during the lesson. I was nervous about crashing into the bottom when falling off, but there was no chance of that at these depths. We each wiped out half a dozen times, but were both able to stand on the board and surf a few waves by the end of the lesson. My daughter is now hooked and was asking to go again tomorrow. A wonderful Hawaiian experience. We will definitely be back next year! Thanks Chris and Kahaluu Bay Surf and Sea!

Great instructor. It was my first time and even though it took me awhile to get up i did. Our instructor was really patient with me.
