We had a nice trip on the Tanaina. It wasn't overly impressive, but still early enough in the season that the animals are a little hard to come by.
The narration on the boat was hard to understand, and the food wasn't anything to write home about (I found a large piece of plastic in my lunch, and the chicken nuggets were about 5 different sizes ranging from dime-sized to average).
It was cold and windy even though the sun was out, but we anticipated that, so make sure you bring layers, gloves, and a hat. Also, bring things to keep your kids entertained - the animals don't always cooperate, so you'll want to have something (playing cards, books, coloring pages, etc.) to keep them occupied during the slower moments.
(also, bring your own snacks in case you wind up with plastic wrappers *in your food*)
